Madison author Jeff Nania's third Northern Lakes Mystery cuts into the rural drug problem Madison author Jeff Nania draws on his years of law enforcement and his love and knowledge of the outdoors to create an all too true mystery surrounding a drug war set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. “Bough Cutter” is Nania’s third mystery in his Northern Lakes Mystery series featuring main character Sheriff John Cabrelli.
Reliving Emo's early years with Say Anything at Upstate Concert Hall - The Alt
Max Bemis took a sloppy swig from his can of Red Bull and cocked his head at the crowd. “There’s something about you guys,” he said coyly. “Have you ripened?” These fans–with arms reaching out to meet him as he jumped offstage to meet them, wielding his mic like a dagger–have grown up with the Say Anything lead singer and the fellow band members shredding onstage.

Wurliday debut single "Active Love" from forthcoming EP - The Alt
Guitarist and composer Justin Henricks’ newest brainchild, Wurliday is a soul-ed out throwback group that deals with timeless material. Henricks and Arielle O’Keefe of Girl Blue collaborated on the lyrics for much of the album, and O’Keefe also appears along with vocalists Jennifer Hartswick of Trey Anastasio Band, and Tyrone Hartzog of The Chronicles.
Daily Event Update: Cannon the Brave & Jasper - The Alt
Cannon the Brave plays their first show since LarkFest in celebration of their recent five-track EP release along with Jasper, the multi-instrumentalist rock trio hailing from Schenectady, tonight at the Madison Theatre. The band, named after singer-songwriter Allyson Smith’s ultra-positive superhero alter ego, exudes as much positivity as their lyrics.
Sean Rowe comes home - The Alt
Sean Rowe may call the Capital Region his home, but these past few years have been filled with countless miles on the road, playing theaters, clubs and the homes of dedicated fans. There was a surprise detour along the way when his song, “To Leave Something Behind,” was featured in the new movie, The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck.
Dinosaur Jr. at MASS MoCA: The joys of archeology - The Alt
“I told him I loved his music and he looks at me disdainfully and says, ‘So what’?’” This summer three men in a metal-focused record shop in Rhode Island recounted their personal interactions with Jay Mascis, frontman of Dinosaur Jr. I’d inquired about whether they had the band’s latest release and while conventional wisdom marks the band’s fanbase as indie and alternative, the metal-loving gentlemen aged from their early 20s to early 50s held Mascis in the highest of esteems.
Lapalux, experimental British record producer, to invade EMPAC with special set - The Alt
He’ll arrive relatively unnoticed by jet, a svelte British man, the tools of his trade stashed covertly in his luggage. He might pause for a moment to take a drag off a cigarette. Then he’ll quickly be ushered to an awaiting vehicle and whisked away to an imposing glass and steel installation hanging over the side of a hill in a small college town. It’s the kind of place that keeps the natives whispering about what just goes on inside.
Live: Mike Gordon at The Egg - The Alt
Like his guitar playing counterpart Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon takes the Phish brand and expands upon it with his own cast of characters, and his own sensibilities. The two groups share some obvious similarities like their use of light hearted lyrics and themes intended above all else to put you in a good mood and include you in a kind of group experience that stimulates your senses and at best sends you on paths of self discovery.

The VAlt: Girl Blue plays "Smoke" - The Alt
VIDEO Last Sunday, Arielle O’Keefe and her crew, fresh off a blowout performance at The Hollow, graced Overit Studios with an intimate performance for the inaugural edition of The VAlt. Girl Blue’s single “Fire Underwater” is exploding on Spotify. Jeff Nania profiled O’Keefe’s rise in the inaugural edition of The Alt, which you can find here and in physical editions across the Capital Region. In this video O’Keefe addresses the impact of technology on her musical career.
Girl Blue claims not to be a star but her Spotify listens indicate otherwise
“Every time I look into your eyes, it’s like fire under water” Arielle O’Keefe sings on her runaway hit “Fire Under Water” from her album I Am Not A Star. The record is full of these evocative lyrics that elicit all types of memories.
Neurosis get back to basics with Fires Within Fires - The Alt
After 30 years of boundary pushing, insane sound experiments, audience provocations, alienating shifts, flirtations with ambient noise–and even folk and country–Oakland’s Neurosis are back to the basics. After expanding the palette that is acceptable for doom and sludge metal artists and creating some of the most starkly consuming albums produced over the past two decades, the band deserves a chance to remind people that they do in fact play a version of rock & roll.
This is the end? The Dillinger Escape Plan's Dissociation - The Alt
Self destruction is The Dillinger Escape Plan’s calling card. The jazz-metal quintet is notorious for physical, injury-plagued live sets. Lead singer Greg Puciato has shit on stage, used his microphone stand as a javelin, hung from the rafters and been hit by a guitar or two. Guitarist Ben Weinman has been through multiple surgeries brought on by his insanely prodigious playing and his frequent wont to throw himself into drum kits.
