Text size: A A A March 1, 2019 ICON's St. Louis Demonstration Flights The St. Louis demo flights by an Icon sales rep caused quite a stir in the local media. What was not reported by you is the aircraft was operating between two heavily trafficked bridges that are only four thousand feet apart. The bridges (over one hundred feet above the water) carry thousands of vehicles daily. If the goal of the flight was to get media attention, that certainly happened.

Why I Sold My Sweepstakes Cub "
Text size: A A A By Jeff Parnau | February 28, 2019 In 2012, I won the grand prize during AirVenture: A fully restored 1941 Piper Cub. I was, of course, surprised, given that there were 865,000 entries that year. It was an honest, original Cub with no electrical system, and a 65-HP Continental which cannot be modified with a starter.

A Sad Year For Airshows "
Text size: A A A By Jeff Parnau | February 2, 2019 As I've stated before, airshow flying is risky. So is practicing to fly in an airshow. Thankfully, not all years include the death of a civilian or military pilot practicing for or flying in a show. But sadly, 2018 was not a good year at all, resulting in the deaths of civilian and military performers, and one who flew in the Reno Air Races for more than 40 years. The six performer/pilots who passed away during 2018 weren't rookies.

Top Letters And Comments, December 7, 2018 Text size: December 7, 2018 Southwest 737 Overruns Runway I was once taught (by my friend who turns 50 today), don’t think ‘how could they,’ think what got them to that place. That is how accident reports make you a better pilot. The first just makes you dismiss the incident. The report places weather at 1m vis, 1300 ovc, wind 9 gusting 13. Oh, and at an airport SWA previously overran so you can image its part of indoc/local training to discuss the overrun.

Short Final: Twilight Zone
Short Final: Twilight Zone Text size: December 7, 2018 My wife and I departed Deer Valley Airport, in Phoenix in our Cessna 177RG. Before departing we received a complicated taxi clearance to what looked like a parking lot at the end the active runway. Deer Valley calls itself “the busiest general aviation airport in the country” with lots of flight training. The “parking lot” was just a run‑up area, able to handle lots of planes.

21-Hornet Flypast At Bush Interment Text size: By Russ Niles | December 5, 2018 Rather than a 21-gun salute, the Navy’s planned tribute to the late President George H.W. Bush could be called a 21-top-gun salute. The Navy is planning a 21-aircraft missing man formation for the interment ceremony of the former president at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas on Thursday. It’s the largest ever missing man formation attempted by the Navy.

Fuel Strainer Lottery "
Fuel Strainer Lottery Text size: By Jeff Parnau | December 1, 2018 It was a Wisconsin-warm, winter-to-spring day. Roads and runways were plowed, but the heavy rains from the previous night did little to diminish several feet of snow on lawns and fields. My friend (let’s call him Bill) and I drove to the airport at 12:30 p.m. to practice some aerobatics in a rentable Super Decathlon.

Short Final: Squawk Time Text size: November 9, 2018 My student and I were nearing the Class C airspace at Palm Beach International airport (KPBI). We asked for clearance. Palm Beach Approach: “Cessna Five Tango Papa, squawk 1454.” This was odd since local squawks always start with 02. But we set what we were given. Approach (about 30 seconds later): “Cessna Five Tango Pop, verify squawking 0227.” Us: “Approach, we were given 1454 on the squawk.” Approach: “Uh, Cessna Five Tango Pop, squawk 0227.

Top Letters And Comments, November 9, 2018 Text size: November 9, 2018 ADS-B Apocalypse As an owner, it's hard to justify spending $2-6K on something we DON't NEED to fly. It's no benefit since we already have an IFR system that functions without it and a VFR system with the lowest accident rate in history. This is a made up, government mandate where some office bureaucrat made an arbitrary decision.

Seller Beware - AVweb Insider Article
Seller Beware Text size: By Jeff Parnau | November 8, 2018 Have you ever sold an airplane? If so, you know it is a remarkably loose transaction. In the days before the internet, you got hold of the carbonless three-part form, wrote down a precious few details including the names of the buyer and seller, the buyer’s address, and the selling price (or $1.00 and OVC, which everyone knows means other valuable considerations). The seller signs it, and off it goes to the FAA via U.S. mail.
