Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Mail-Advertiser Publications in Highland Park. Ill. Covered high school sports when I was in high school. Long gone, of course.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

A typewriter and carbon paper.

How is social media changing news?

Making it more immediate, yet less accurate.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Bogey in "Deadline USA," and especially when he holds the phone up and says, "That's the press, baby. The press! And there's nothing you can"

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Write accurately. Make deadline. Ask good questions.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email me. Please.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Linux, baby!

What's your favorite social network?

Don't really use it.

Who do you wish followed you?

I wish they paid me to write for them instead.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to get paid for writing. Which has sort of worked out.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

The editor, of course.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

How do I choose? I've done some fine work in my career.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The business may have changed, but being good at it hasn't -- get right and do it on deadline.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mornings.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Never was able to sell it -- how grape waste can help alleviate avian flu.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Too many to choose from. Way too many.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading. Cooking. Drinking wine.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Anywhere I have a story.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Wine is dull.
