The California Attorney General Is Poised to Increase Enforcement of the California Privacy Rights Act in 2023 | JD Supra
Businesses subject to the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”)[1] and the California Privacy Rights Act (“CPRA”)[2] can expect increased enforcement actions starting in 2023, as the CPRA’s provisions become fully effective and the notice-and-cure provisions of the CCPA expire. The CCPA and CPRA are the first comprehensive consumer privacy statutes in the country and have become a model for similar laws in other states.

Opinion: Curb refinery emissions to reduce Bay Area air pollution Original
As physicians, the past year’s challenges of COVID-19 and poor air quality from wildfires have focused our attention on the health of our lungs. Unfortunately, according to the American Lung Association, the Bay Area experiences the fifth highest year-round levels of air pollution in the entire nation, and that’s before you add in the extra burden of pollution from our annual wildfires. However, there is hope for addressing one source of local air pollution, particulate emissions from refineries.
Why Banning Chokeholds Endangers The Lives of Aggressors And Police
I’m not particularly squeamish, but I could not bring myself to watch the entire video of George Floyd’s death. I could not endure the brutal and callous way he faced his final moments. Now, as a martial arts practitioner, I have seen plenty of people knocked out or choked out. In fact, it’s happened to me. What happened to Floyd was different. Law enforcement officers and martial arts teachers I have spoken with all agree.
Why ‘People Of Color’ Is A Phrase We All Should Stop Using
Last year, a Detroit festival known as Afrofuture Fest made headlines when it charged different prices for tickets to POC (“people of color’) and NONPOC (i.e., white people). I was happy they reversed their decision, as I could not figure out how much to pay for me, my “POC” wife, and my biracial children.

The SmartBit365WatsonBlockExperienceQuantumDesignThinkingDigitalEdgeChain Looks Pretty Good
I ran across an announcement of a product that is surely to be released soon that I am sure will be a big hit. The SmartBit365WatsonBlockExperienceQuantumDesignThinkingDigitalEdgeChain doesn’t just press, but smashes all the right buttons. I am not really sure what it does, but with a name like that, what could it NOT do? It could be the solution to every problem you ever had, and probably quite a few you never realized you have.
New Year's Reversolutions for 2018
For nine years now, I have been posting a list of New Years anti-resolutions, as a light-hearted look at what I think other people should stop doing. Industry analysts are more accustomed to to telling others what to do than looking at ourselves. That is much easier, and generally makes for more interesting blog posts. This year I want to make a small twist, though not as big as two years ago. I still want to tell other people what to do (no reason to let that go).
The Gartner Aspiring Innovators for 2017
For the third time, we ran a programme at this year’s Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in Cape Town that highlights local high tech startups from Africa. We asked on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook for companies doing interesting things, and selected six out of the 30 proposals submitted to highlight at the event. We were not necessarily looking for the best vendors out there, but wanted an interesting sample of what was going on in the startup scene in Africa. I think we achieved that.
This time I don't really mind being wrong
Data sovereignty is a persistent topic in my cloud office inquiries. Many customers want to know where Microsoft Office 365 or Google G Suite will put their emails, files and other data — or want to understand why they shouldn’t care. Having a data center in their own country, or at least close to them is surprisingly comforting. This research note describes many of the issues. Recently when I was visiting clients in South Africa, the issue came up several times especially with government agencies.
Looking for 2017's African Aspiring Innovators
Now in its third year, the search has started for the Aspiring Innovators to be highlighted at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo Africa 2017. It will put the spotlight on interesting African startup technology companies who have something unique to offe r enterprise organisations. The goal of this programme is to both support the African startup technology scene, and provide delegates access to innovative local technology providers.
(They're Back!) New Year's Anti-Resolutions for 2017
Last year, I opted not to do the yearly New Year’s anti-resolutions I have been doing since 2009. I thought that things were generally going pretty well, with no need to talk people out of doing stuff I don’t think they should be doing. Looking back on 2016, it seems that there is a need once again for the anti-resolutions. They are “anti” in a couple different ways. The main one is that these are not things that I intend to do, but stuff intended for other people. That is much easier.
Africa's Aspiring Innovators 2016
In addition to being an analyst, one of the most fun things I get to do is chair the Symposium event in Cape Town. With about 1000 delegates, it is one of the smaller Symposium sites, certainly compared with the hordes who go to Orlando. The scale of the Cape Town event means that I get to try some fun, new things. For the second time this year, we ran a programme that highlights local high tech startups from Africa.
Gartner Reprint
EFSS destination vendors increasingly address digital workplace enablement. IT leaders can consider this market and choose among a range of maturing options for cloud-based content collaboration and data infrastructure modernization. By 2018, 70% of EFSS destination vendors will cease to exist, having been acquired or put out of business, and the remaining 30% will evolve to support the digital workplace or modernize corporate data infrastructures.
Gartner Cancels Hype Cycle in Response to "Peak Hype" Crisis
Following on reports of the global environment reaching “peak hype,”Gartner Inc announced today that it will cancel this year’s publication of its popular Hype Cycle series. “World wide stocks of hype are at dangerously low levels,” said a company spokesperson.
Fun with EFSS MQ Surveys
One of the least fun parts about being an analyst (or, I imagine working with analyst relations at a vendor) is dealing with magic quadrant and critical capabilities vendor surveys. We use these to collect information from vendors about their products when preparing these research notes. We combine this information with our assessments and impressions when doing the ratings. The surveys themselves tend to be large detailed spreadsheets with hundreds of yes/no/partial replies and explanations.

The 11 Steps Established Vendors Go Through when Something New Comes Along
by Jeffrey Mann | July 14, 2015 | 1 Comment As an analyst, I often see new Big Things coming by. Things like cloud, big data, mobility, even going back to client-server. The reaction of established vendors to these Big Things is pretty predictable, even depressingly so. Here is what it looks like, where X = whatever is new. X will never work No one really wants X. No one really needs X. X might be promising but it is 10-20 years away. X is an option for those who need it.
Dropbox Acquires CloudOn: GameOn, but Which Game?
Word emerged today that Dropbox has acquired CloudOn, a mobile productivity vendor based in Israel. CloudOn produced a Microsoft Word compatible editor for mobile devices and browsers. There are two ways to look at this move. It makes sense for Dropbox, as editing is functionality that their users are looking for. Having it would help them compete against Google and Microsoft and other EFSS players which have built in editing features.
Finally, Facebook at Work
Over the last several years, I have done many inquiries which are some variation of “How do we get Facebook for use internally?” or “When will Facebook issue a version for use within our company?” I would generally point to pure-play enterprise social vendors because I was pretty sceptical about Facebook doing this, for two main reasons: There have been several indications over the last couple months that this analysis was no longer valid, and today the penny dropped.
2015’s New Years Anti-Resolutions
For the past several years (way too many, actually), I have written a series of blog posts on anti-resolutions for the new year. So far, that and the April Fool’s Dauy post have been my most reliable posts, sometimes the only posts in a year. Publishing predictions in a blog or video post around this time of year is easy and predictable. So I won’t. If lots of people do something, that usually makes me want to not do it. My resolutions are “anti” in several ways.
Branding Issues and Australian Life Guards
I’ve been in Australia for the last week or so for the Symposium event here, and was lucky enough to spend some time on a couple of the beaches in Gold Coast and Sydney. As well as being impressed by the scenery, sun and great swimming, the respect shown for the life guards was impressive. With the danger of strong currents it is no wonder that most people don’t need to be reminded about staying between the flags when swimming.
