Just how fancy is Yotam Ottolenghi’s new kitchen?
“Don’t judge me by my messiness,” says Yotam Ottolenghi, grinning sheepishly as he opens one of the drawers in his newly renovated...
‘It’s a Wonderful Life’? The highs and lows of multigenerational living
For many families, December is a time when three generations gather under one roof.
Inside the DIY rave scene that's reshaping Cornwall's musical heritage
Since moving to Falmouth, Hockeysmith and her eel collective have tapped into a rich vein of progressive energy Words by Tristan Gatward Photos by Jenna Foxton The holed stone at Mên-an-tol stands thirty miles north of Falmouth, guarded by ailment-curing fairies, piskies and clairvoyant spirits.
We've reached our subscriber goal – so here's what happens next - Loud And Quiet
Dear readers, At the beginning of lockdown, I wrote this statement about how things looked for us at Loud And Quiet. The short version was that it didn’t look very good at all. For reasons listed in that post, it was looking like we were going to have to close L&Q after 15 years of being in print.
John Talabot and Sons of Raphael help complete the line-up for Pitchfork Paris 2019
They'll join headliners like Skepta and Chromatics Words by Loud And Quiet Photos by Jenna Foxton This year’s Pitchfork Paris is fast approaching â the end of next month, in fact. And they’ve just completed the line-up for this year’s festival by adding a few more artists. They include John Talabot, Sons of Raphael (photographed), BEA1991, Agar Agar and Brazilian-Norwegian jazz singer Charlotte Dos Santos. Nelson Beer is playing instead of Drugdealer.
Tom Fleming of Wild Beasts goes solo as One True Pairing, shares debut self-titled single
With his former Wild Beasts bandmate Hayden Thorpe having already taken the solo album route, Tom Fleming has today revealed his own new project. It's called One True Pairing, which he says "is a name taken from internet fan fiction, where you write the perfect relationship you always wished existed.
End of the Road festival 2019 just got bigger, scarier and weirder
Yeah, Gazelle Twin is coming. Plus, a bunch of others Words by Loud And Quiet Photos by Jenna Foxton Let’s start with a recap. At the end of January End of the Road festival gave us a much-needed mid-winter boost by sharing a generous chunk of their 2019 line-up, including their headliners for this year’s festival. As we pointed out at the time Metronomy, Spiritualized, Beirut and Michael Kiwanuka will be great, but truly it’s a bill you can burrow deep down into.
The story of Self-Esteem – the result of some serious soul-searching - Loud And Quiet
Rebecca Taylor says her first pop album after 15 years in an indie band “feels like meat" Words by Ian Roebuck Photos by Jenna Foxton “I’ll just have a sparkling water,” says a rejuvenated Rebecca Taylor. New Year, new me? “Fuck that, this is a transformation, unless I get invited to the Glamour Awards – there is no way I can’t drink champagne at the Glamour Awards. It’s that, Jools Holland or a tube poster.
Gazelle Twin has given Brexit a suitably twisted face and written a soundtrack for the bitterness beneath our green and pleasant land
"Where do we live? Are we safe? What are the next ten years going to be like?" Words by Ben Hewitt Photos by Jenna Foxton The black-clad figure ambling through the halls of the National Gallery wouldn’t draw many furtive glances.
Gazelle Twin is on the cover of Loud And Quiet 127 – pre-order now - Loud And Quiet
Just imagine seeing this in your local park The month of July was a surreal one. Maybe it was the heat, maybe it was the giant inflatable Trump baby flying a few miles from our office, maybe it was England doing so well in the World Cup that we couldn’t even hate each individual member of the team.

From the beer to the beats, Green Man is different, disruptive and dedicated to keeping its unique identity. Over the years it has grown from a party in a field to an event with a reputation as one of the best festivals in Europe as audiences and artists alike connect with its ethos of zero corporate sponsorship, local suppliers and a focus on high quality music. Things we weren't expecting today - a new track by Let's Eat Grandma produced by SOPHIE - Loud And Quiet
It works. In fact, it really works. A collaboration that never even entered into your mind turns out to be inspired. On paper, now label mates on Transgressive, Let’s Eat Grandma and SOPHIE appear to be different artists. However, at some point somebody threw in the idea of a collaboration, and it works. The result is this new track ‘Hot Pink’ – the first new music Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth have shared since releasing their debut ‘I, Gemini’ in 2016.
Every time someone plays this new song from Anna von Hausswolff an ocean splits and the devil laughs his head off - Loud And Quiet
Co-written by Ed Sheeran... (not really, it's massive, bleak, brilliant, scary and made on a church organ) Anna von Hausswolff’s music is grand, but her explanations are simple. So we’ll follow suit, and keep it brief. The Gothenburg-based songwriter has just announced details of a new album, ‘Dead Magic’, coming out on City Slang on 2 March 2018. ‘The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra’ is the first track shared from it. “Me, my band and Randall Dunn spent 9 days in Copenhagen recording this record.
Sons of Raphael - the first new band interview we've done that was interrupted by the group's irate debt collector - Loud And Quiet
London brothers Ronnel and Loral make music - they also owe a guy in a tracksuit some money Every now and then a band comes along with such panache and with such a magisterial supporting cast in tow that you have to wonder if the band are real at all. Sons of Raphael could be that band. Rich in mythology and heaped with praise after just a whistle of online activity, are they really as authentic as they promise?
Sons of Raphael perform 'Eating People'... in front of the church congregation at an all-boys school - Loud And Quiet
For their debut single ‘Eating People’ it’s like London duo Sons of Raphael asked the question: ‘where could we perform our music where it would be least at home?’ The answer: probably midway through a church service being held an an all-boys boarding school. So, here they are, brothers Loral and Ronnel, bewildering the congregation with their squally debut track ‘Eating People’.
Nick Mulvey is elevating music to a higher consciousness
Nick Mulvey is sitting in a car making its way through London, getting pretty deep. The last six years of his life have been filled with personal and professional breakthroughs: the kind of stuff that most of us never really get around to figuring out. After being nominated for the Mercury Prize with jazz band Portico Quartet, Nick got bored and quit – reinventing himself as singer-songwriter who earned another Mercury nomination for his debut solo album, First Mind.
SHAME share a protest song in the hope they won't need to write another for five years - Loud And Quiet
This one's for Theresa It’s not a new song, but it is a relevant one. South London’s SHAME aren’t a band afraid of airing their viewpoint, especially when it comes to politics. ‘Visa Vulture’ was written while Theresa May spent six years in government as Home Secretary. Tomorrow (8 June) she aims to become a Prime Minister selected by the people in her own snap General Election. Deliberate then, that SHAME have chosen now to share it.
Kite Base - Two bass guitars, a sense of humour and embracing the absurd - Loud And Quiet
Working in a team of two can be intense in any situation, musical or otherwise, but many of the most iconic songwriting partnerships are as notable for their acrimonious breakdowns as the productive years that preceded them. Morrissey and Marr, Lennon and McCartney, Gilmour and Waters – it always seems that the more fruitful the relationship, the more spectacular its dissolution ends up being.
HMLTD cover feature - the committed, divisive, 24/7 art project is not about escapism - Loud And Quiet
'Polarisation is a good indicator, if everybody likes what you’re doing unanimously, then it’s kind of a sign that what you’re doing is most likely quite boring' I think what I like most about HMLTD is their commitment. For all the hype that has built up around the band over the past year within indie music circles across the capital and beyond, we’ve all seen plenty of part-timers release a couple of singles and get a bit of buzz before fading away.
HMLTD are on the cover of Loud And Quiet 83 – in stores this weekend - Loud And Quiet
Also, interviews with Idles, Kadhja Bonet, Rejjie Snow, Sleaford Mods, The Magnetic Field, Pissed Jeans and Kelly Lee Owens I feel for new bands sometimes. They can’t win.
Slowdive have just posted their first new song in 22 years – listen to 'Star Roving' - Loud And Quiet
3 years after reforming, Slowdive have shared a new track In 2014, after 19 years of nothing, Creation cult band Slowdive resurfaced for a string of shows starting at Primavera Sound. Daniel Dylan Wray was there and spoke to Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead moments before they went on stage. In that interview they alluded to making a new record (their fourth, following ‘Just for a Day’ (1991), ‘Souvlaki’ (1993) and ‘Pygmalion’ (1995)), but have remained quiet since that summer of touring.
