What was your first job as a journalist?
I did a story on a tanning salon that opened up in my college town (and as someone who is extremely pale, it was mildly ironic).
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes - my paternal grandparents had one in their study, and I loved typing away at it as a kid.
How is social media changing news?
It makes news immediate and accessible, but also blurs fact from rumor, increasing the need for accurate reporting.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I know it's in broadcast (as I'm in print) but I enjoyed Will McAvoy in "The Newsroom."
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist is about shining a light on what matters and giving a voice to those who might otherwise be unheard.

Mostly Google Workspace, WordPress

Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted to provide a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. I wanted to make a difference - no matter how small.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No high school paper for me - I discovered my love of journalism in my sophomore year of college.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I am proud of a story I did on a bill that would have eliminated the need for puppy mills in Texas. A lot of hard work went into that.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Ask the tough questions, but be fair and empathetic - reporting is about truth, not alienation.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Likely in the afternoon, after deadline.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A Deaf woman traveled all the way from Massachusettes to adopt two Deaf puppies from the Smith County Animal Shelter.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The worst pitch I ever got was about an alleged dogfighting ring in Tyler - ‘worst’ only because of the heartbreak and horrors involved.
What's your favorite drink?
I love Diet Dr Pepper, but for an energy boost, I reach for Alani Nu.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Either refereeing my dogs and cat during their daily chaos or getting lost in a book.

Whatever is credible.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Some people assume education reporting is all about school plays and bake sales. In reality, it’s about the policies, funding, and decisions that shape students’ and teachers’ everyday lives.
