Over the river: Fostering a bond between kids and grandparents helps both

Over the river: Fostering a bond between kids and grandparents helps both

www.nyparenting.com — My grandparents' house was small and had only one floor. It smelled like clothes that had been hung in the back of the closet and been forgotten - worn and comfortable, remnants of a more vivacious time. My brother and I loved kneeling on the floor of my grandfather's cluttered office and peering at the black-and-white likenesses of my parents without worry lines. My grandmother would tell us stories about how she would harvest water chestnuts with the neighborhood kids, as we loudly slurped her hot and spicy noodle soup. Our visits to our grandparents' house were rare, but treasured.

Expanding Your Horizons: Seven Tips to Get on an International Board " The Glass Hammer

www.theglasshammer.com — Recent studies on women in the boardroom reveal that women are getting seats at the table at an unfortunately slow rate. In fact, calls for more women on boards have been more vocal in Europe and the UK. For example, Britain just announced that companies would have to announce to shareholders by September 2012 their own targets for placing women on their boards, and state clearly how they plan to do so. Countries such as France, Spain, and Norway have already introduced compulsory quotas. Irene Natividad, chair of Corporate Women Directors International, said, "Something is happening, and it's driven by Europe."

Managing Through the Holidays: Five Tips to Remember " The Glass Hammer

www.theglasshammer.com — We've now passed Thanksgiving - which means the holidays are right around the corner. And when sugarplums are dancing in your employees' heads come the holiday season, it can be hard for work to compete. An Accountemps survey published last year revealed that one-third of senior managers surveyed said their employees are less productive the week before a major holiday - and this season is full of them! At the same time, this is the busiest time of year for most firms whose clients are clamoring to meet year-end goals.

Asian Investors Eye DC Real Estate

Asian Investors Eye DC Real Estate

www.asianfortunenews.com — By: Jenny Chen Washington, D.C. - In 2006 the U.S. housing market spiraled to an all time low, throwing roughly four million families into foreclosure. But our loss was another's gain. Although the housing market is still merely 52% as strong as it was prior to the housing crash, according to the house sales website Trulia, Asian investors are snapping up U.S. real estate. They view the U.S. real estate market as relatively cheap and the U.S. government as relatively stable, says John Lin, president of Capstar Realty in Gaithersburg, MD. This fervent interest in U.S.

Is technology a sleep snatcher for your kid?

Is technology a sleep snatcher for your kid?

www.nyparenting.com — We all know that sleep is important for growing children, and that they often aren't getting enough shut-eye. But a recent report shows just how serious the problem might be. Yet, even if you get your kids to bed on time, they may have trouble falling asleep. The culprit? Increased use of technology. The results of a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control show that 68.9 percent of children in the United States don't get enough sleep. Students who get less than eight hours of sleep per night are 86 percent more likely to seriously consider suicide, and 60 percent more likely to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol.

Slacker or Scholar?

Slacker or Scholar?

www.insidecolby.com — As a high schooler I thought 2012 would be my golden year. By summer I would be a college graduate, poised to enter the workforce as a member of the CIA or an investigative journalist for some hotshot news agency. Or I might be entering one of the top law schools of the country-if not Harvard, maybe Yale. I never thought that I wouldn't actually be graduating. When I told my friends I was taking some time off, there was always a pregnant pause where they would think-"Oh, she just couldn't handle academia."

www.insidecolby.com — Published December 5, 2012 James Lucas '15 has an inch-long fingernail on his left thumb. Is it a letter-opener? A weapon? An affectation? None of the above. It's a mark of a serious origami folder. Two years ago he used it to fold a couple hundred bow ties from dollar bills on a commission from Las Vegas's Wynn casino. He can also fold anything from animals to astrological signs. Lucas '15 folds origami in his room at Colby Lucas has been doing origami for as long as he can remember.

Q&A Michelle Russell '11

www.insidecolby.com — Published October 15, 2010 Recently you helped start the WATCH (Women Against Toxic Cosmetic Harm) group to ban chemicals from cosmetics. What's that been like? There's at least thirty of us in the group: it's Colby students, Unity [College] students, and Waterville and Winslow high school students. We sent in the shampoos, lipsticks, and stuff that you can find in the shopping center to be tested. The majority of the products did contain a harmful thing-either a carcinogen, potential neurotoxin, or a reproductive toxic. So that was pretty scary, because they were products that were just on the grocery store shelf and things that people use every day.
