1 INTRODUCTION Fungi constitute one of the most diverse groups of organisms on earth. They have adapted to inhabit essentially every corner of the world and take over fundamental roles in ecosystem functioning. And yet, our knowledge of fungal diversity is concerningly fragmentary with less than 8% of an estimated 2–6 million species formally described to date (Baldrian et al., 2021; GBIF Secretariat, 2023; Hawksworth & Lücking, 2017).
