For Number 5
Seventeen players will suit up for Dayton’s first-round NCAA tournament game this week. We have a really close team this year. I wish you knew them like I do. We’re a motley crew: There’s Xeyrius Williams, who’s the pretty boy; there’s Ryan Mikesell, who’s the peacemaker; there’s Darrell Davis, who’s the prankster; and there’s me — I started as a team manager as a sophomore (the guy with the clipboard), but after a lot of pestering I convinced our coach to give me a tryout … and I made the team.

In 2013, my freshman year at Dayton, I went to our gym, the RecPlex, every day. I’m talking every single day. Classes were done? Off to the Rec. I probably spent more time hooping than I spent in my dorm room. And pretty early on, I think other kids noticed. But not like, Oh, that kid’s really good at basketball. Nah, it was more like, Oh, that Jeremiah kid down the hall? He’s a weirdo. He never goes out. He doesn’t like to drink. I guess they were right. I didn’t want to drink. I wanted to ball.
Somebody's In Trouble | By Keon Johnson
When you’re 5? 7?, the only thing you can do is face reality. You’re not gonna get any taller, man. Growing up, I always had game. Being shorter than the other kids in your class matters less when you’re young. But that changed before my freshman year of high school. My team was playing in the AAU nationals in Florida. All the top players in the country were there. I remember walking into the gym and the energy was palpable.

Making a Name for Myself | By T.J. Cline
This past summer, before my final year at the University of Richmond, I wanted to make two major improvements in my life. The first was to get in better shape and clean up my diet. The second was to improve my ballhandling skills and my jump shot. Luckily, an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings offered to train me. One-on-one training with an actual NBA coach, in an actual NBA arena. I’m a college player at a mid-major in Virginia. I couldn’t say no to that.
