No Kings Day #3: SF Gets Its Signs Up and Costumes On
In San Francisco, sometimes it’s hard to tell at first if a huge gathering is for Halloween, Bay to Breakers, a rave, or a nationwide protest against the erosion of democracy, domestic military actions, and a menu of other complaints and alarms about the Trump administration. On Saturday, it was the third national day of “No Kings” protests since Donald Trump was re-elected in November 2024. Organizers said there were more than 3,000 gatherings worldwide.

How to Use the rsync Command
Overview One of my favorite utilities on the Linux command-line, and block storage is one of my favorite features on Linode's platform, so in this article I get to combine both of these together - because what I'm going to be doing is show you how to use rsync to copy data from one server to another, in the form of a backup. What's really cool about this, is that this example will utilize block storage.
How to use Block Storage to Increase Space on Your Nextcloud Instance

5 Distributions Of Linux To Consider For Your Server
Linux servers are everywhere. There's a good chance a number of your favorite websites are running on infrastructure that's powered by Linux, not to mention streaming services, social media platforms, gaming networks, the list goes on. The only thing more staggering than the number of Linux servers there are in the wild, is how many distributions you have to choose from.
Let’s Travel Back in Time on Really Small San Francisco Cable Cars
San Francisco’s treasured cable cars have been off their rails, sleeping since the city went into a COVID-induced shutdown last March. Officials from Muni said last month that they had to prioritize essential services amid limited resources, which cast doubt on a cable car return anytime soon. Earlier this month, though, Mayor London Breed promised we’d see them before the end of the year.

The George Floyd Protests Must Go On. SF’s Shops Must Not Be Collateral Damage
Businesses in the city already were in deep trouble under lockdown. Their latest losses make things worse on the streets. Anger, disgust, outrage. The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has set off protests across the country to say Enough. This impunity, this racism, this callous disregard for one man’s life — and so many lives — cannot go unchallenged. In San Francisco and elsewhere, we have had — and must continue to have — peaceful protests.
Street Photo Spotlight: San Francisco Scenes Worth 1,000 Lyrics
I usually shoot toys on the street inspired by the moment. This time, I drew inspiration from songs and found just the right spots around the city. I also learned local music history and made new friends along the way. For the past 10 years I’ve photographed toys with my iPhone, creating the illusion that they are larger than they actually are through a technique known as forced perspective. Shot in just the right location and juxtaposed with insightful quotations, the photos turn into stories.
7 Places from My 1997 Move to San Francisco That No Longer Exist
In this age of retail anxiety, what does the ebb and flow of small businesses reveal about our penchant for nostalgia? Lucca was the spot for ravioli since 1925. The mere sight of their authentic red, green, and white awning (not shown) was enough to make your mouth water. (REASON FOR EXTINCTION: Owner retired.) Lamenting the end of this or that small business — one day it’s Lucca on Valencia Street, the next day it’s the Haight Ashbury Music Center — is a cottage industry in San Francisco.
The Last Amazing Cobblestone Street on Potrero Hill Was Once Nearly Paved Over
The stones are still there, making life interesting on the city’s seventh steepest block. You can thank a crusty old neighbor, a flexible supervisor, and, maybe just a little bit, Michael Douglas. Back in the early 2000s I was living on 24th Street between De Haro and Rhode Island, the steepest street of Potrero Hill and — by this amateur sleuth’s estimate — the seventh steepest street in San Francisco.
9 lessons mushing taught me about teamwork
Working with athletes can be intimidating — especially if they train outside all year and radiate a raw, tough-as-nails intensity. They are all about doing what they have to do, and it’s not a good idea to get in their way. I thought this as I approached the yard of Alaskan huskies for the first time, where it wasn’t clear if the sledding dogs here were super-friendly or stark mad. Some were jumping, others howling, some resting in their kennels, others standing on top of them.
