Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Interning with The Montclair Times and writing about how my high school graduation's location was up in the air.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Not in a professional capacity, but I had one as a kid.
How is social media changing news?
How it's distributed, how it's consumed, how it's reported. Every development in a story is now a separate story. Attention spans are shorter
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Peter Parker
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Serving a role that is protected by the constitution and is an absolute essential piece of our democracy.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I always tell my roommate who works in PR that journalists are like the T-Rex — we don't want to be fed, we want to hunt.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter
Who do you wish followed you?
Obama & Killer Mike follow me, Woj did for a while while I covered St. Anthony. My top 3 wish list: Scott Van Pelt, Desus Nice, Katie Nolan
Why did you become a journalist?
Growing up I loved sports and I loved writing — it only made sense to combine the two. The more I study and practice it, the more I love it.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the sports editor at The Mountaineer, though I only joined my senior year.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I was very proud of our St. Anthony closure coverage, we broke the news and had incredibly unique content leading up to decision day
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read every day, write every day, have an incredibly versatile skill set, don't say no to anything, take pride in what you do.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Too many bad ones to count.
What's your favorite drink?
Seltzer if I'm thirsty, coffee if I'm sleepy, bourbon if I'm off the clock
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At a sporting event, on a run, or exploring Jersey City with friends
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New York Times, Yahoo, Deadspin, ESPN, Bleacher Report, GQ, The Ringer, The New Yorker
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's easy. Covering games isn't as simple as just watching. You're working from the minute you get to the event to the minute you leave.
