What was your first job as a journalist?

Deputy Editor of the Fresh Produce Journal, the UK's trade magazine for the fresh produce industry.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

when i was a child.

How is social media changing news?

Levelling playing field. I can tweet people I'd never normally reach. And anyone can break a story. Twitter's great for research too.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin

What does it mean to be a journalist?

I get paid to write sentences.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

If yesterdays news becomes fish and chip shop wrappers what on earth does yesterday's hashtag become? I don't remember them.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email will reach me instantly, anywhere.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop. Pen. Notebook. 'Self Control' app that turns off selected online distractions. Open Office. Camera. Phone. Wordpress. Pixlr.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

People who believe tourism can be a force for good, and anyone who wants green issues communicated to a mainstream audience.

Why did you become a journalist?

So as to earn a living from writing, which is the thing I love doing most.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

we didn't have one.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

'Silence is not an Option', an article I wrote at the beginning of this year on how the safari industry needs to do more to combat poaching.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

write quickly. rewrite slowly.
