Opinion | Vaclav Havel: The Playwright in Prague Castle
Op-Ed Contributor Dec. 21, 2011 On Oct. 18, 1989, Czech security police arrested me and 15 Czech dissidents in order to prevent us from meeting in a public place in Prague. Vaclav Havel was part of our group, but he evaded arrest because he arrived late. Later that day, after most of us had been released from detention, we met informally at the Intercontinental Hotel. In just one month Czechoslovakia’s “Velvet Revolution” would begin, though none of us would have predicted it at the time.

Remembering Lyudmila Alexeyeva
My favorite photo of Lyudmila was taken in 1973. Lyuda with a group of friends, sitting on a couch, arms around each other, joyful in their camaraderie. A few years later, in 1976, they would form the Moscow Helsinki Group to report on violations of human rights in their country. In doing so, they became victims themselves. Within a short time, most of their members were gone, sentenced to prison or labor camp, followed by internal exile.
25 years after the fall of Communism: a call
When much of the world pays no lip service to democratic values, it would be a great disaster if countries in the heart of Europe were to turn away. Twenty-five years ago, in November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. Over the course of one weekend, some two million jubilant East Germans breached the Wall and crossed into West Berlin to greet family, friends and countrymen from whom they had been forcibly separated for more than twenty-eight years. The East German Communist leaders had lost control.
25 Years After the Fall of Communism: A Call
At a time when much of the world does not even pay lip service to democratic values, it would be a great disaster if countries in the heart of Europe were to turn away from such values and establish authoritarian regimes. Twenty-five years ago, in November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell.
Is Cuba Really Changing?
Fidel Castro; drawing by David Levine Just before I left New York for Havana, at the end of February, I went to see the Cuban film Strawberry and Chocolate. Shown to record crowds in Havana last year, the film is a moving and sympathetic portrait of the restricted lives of Cuban homosexuals, who have long been persecuted by the Castro regime and were interned in “rehabilitation” camps during the 1960s.
