Longitudinal Multiyear Characteristics of Cryptosporidium and Giardia Concentrations in Surface Water: Application to Risk Characterization
Abstract The waterborne outbreak potential of Cryptosporidium and Giardia is recognized by public water supply agencies, motivating monitoring of surface sources to meet applicable drinking water regulations. In this study, data from 10 or more years of continuous monitoring at several sites were compiled and analyzed to describe patterns of occurrence and to outline data analysis procedures to better inform watershed management and treatment system management for control of these pathogens.

Evaluation of Treatment for Removing Giardia Cysts
The removal of Giardia cysts by three small (0.01- to 0.57-mgd) treatment plants—one with conventional filtration, one with in-line filtration, and one with diatomaceous earth filtration—was studied. Turbidity and cyst removals for each were compared with those of parallel pilot filters (1 gpm) seeded with Giardia cysts and with and without optimization of chemical treatment. Cyst removal efficiencies ranged from about 40 to 99 percent.
