Treasury Debt and Inflation Tax
Abstract We calculate the implicit inflation tax borne by households due to their holdings of U.S. Treasury debt. Nominal assets lose value due to unexpected inflation. We calculate unexpected changes in current and future inflation and document households’ holdings of Treasury debt across the wealth distribution, accounting for direct and indirect holdings through financial intermediaries.
The Impact of Tax Differences on Intrafirm Patent Transactions
Tax differences between countries can have a big impact on intellectual property (IP) transactions that occur within a multinational company. For many multinationals, the most important IP transactions involve patents, which are valuable exclusive rights that allow inventors to control their inventions for a certain period of time.
Global Profit Shifting through Intellectual Property and the Impact of US Tax Reforms
Globalization has allowed multinational enterprises (MNEs) to expand their operations to reach new markets across the globe. However, one drawback of globalization is that MNEs can easily shift their profits to lower-tax countries. Profit shifting is a practice in which MNEs move their profits from high-tax countries to low-tax countries to lower their overall tax burden.
Geographic Dispersion in U.S. Employment
Employment statistics often receive notable attention as economic indicators during times of stress, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an ever-changing economy, employment varies significantly across the more than 3,000 counties in the United States. Most employment is concentrated in a few areas, with large areas of little employment in between. Figure 1 uses 2020 nonfarm payroll employment data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis to exhibit this phenomenon.
How Much Are We ‘Taxed’ by Surprise Inflation?
In an economy, borrowing and lending are typically conducted in nominal terms: A lender provides a loan for a certain sum of money and a borrower repays that exact sum plus interest. This means that, whenever the price level of goods and services is different from what people expected—an “inflation shock”—each transaction has a “winner” and a “loser” in terms of the real value delivered (in comparison to what was agreed upon).
Global Supply Chain Disruptions and Inflation During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Abstract We investigate the role supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic played in U.S. producer price index (PPI) inflation. We exploit pre-pandemic cross-industry variation in sourcing patterns across countries and interact it with measures of international supply chain bottlenecks during the pandemic. We show that exposure to global supply chain disruptions played a significant role in U.S. cross-industry PPI inflation between January and November 2021.
The Rise of Asia as a Destination for U.S. Patenting
Why Do Inventors Patent Internationally? To ensure that inventions are not stolen or distributed without permission, innovators seek protection using channels such as patenting. Because patents are territorial, a patent office can only guarantee protection within the borders they govern.
