2nd Chance After Prison Can Lead Way to Safer America
I walked out of prison at age 30 with high hopes after serving nearly eight years for armed bank robbery. I was fortunate to be rescued by a few of the rare hands reaching out to offer help to someone like me. Others aren’t so lucky. Even with helping hands, personal change is hard. Research shows it can take a person two months to learn to drink an extra glass of water each day. Imagine trying to become a better version of yourself in prison, a restricted community where negative influences abound.
I spent time in prison for robbing a bank. Here’s how we prevent ex-cons from going back to jail Original
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! Prisons are often held up as a solution to crime, but incarceration without rehabilitation is a cause of crime too. With violence inundating cities, it’s time to look inside prisons and reimagine their possibilities. While serving time for bank robbery, I saw up close what didn’t work.
The Quasi-Religious Roots of Weezer - OnFaith
Last week, Marc Maron’s popular WTF podcast featured his interview with Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. Prayer That Can Sustain the Busy Life - OnFaith
In the New Testament, James exhorts Christians to “be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22, ESV). Because, as a runner, writer, reader, professor, puppy-chaser, backyard chicken farmer, laundry room manager, church deacon, and wife, I have no trouble with doing — and doing it all (or trying to) for the kingdom of God.
I Was Free to Find Religion in Prison. Will the Supreme Court Protect That Freedom? - OnFaith
As the Supreme Court begins its deliberations this Tuesday to determine whether a Muslim man imprisoned in Arkansas should be afforded the right to grow a beard based on his religious conviction (Holt vs. Hobbs), I cannot help but reflect on my own journey. After serving nearly eight years in the Iowa penal system, I walked out of prison extremely thankful. At 29, I was radically different than the dangerous, hopeless, and selfish 21-year-old that robbed a bank at gunpoint.
We need to reform sentencing, yes, and then 'second prison'
Amid the polarized politics of an election year, an unlikely bipartisan consensus has emerged on the need for criminal justice reform. With the support of Democratic Minnesota Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, Congress is looking to reduce the federal prison population through the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act. Closer to home, the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission has backed shorter sentences for lesser drug offenses. The conversation about corrections reform is overdue.
