Abstract Centralized wastewater treatment systems (CWTSs) are increasingly expected to strengthen water security through reclaimed water reuse. Yet whether centralized expansion can simultaneously achieve cost recovery and reduce water stress remains unresolved. We assess the viability of CWTSs in China using an inventory of 10,826 wastewater treatment plants and data on wastewater generation, reuse demand and socioeconomic scenarios.
