OPINION: Our universities are under siege. Time is running out to fight back
Trump’s assault on higher education doesn’t just threaten students and researchers. It puts America’s global excellence in grave peril. American higher education has achieved a stature comparable to few in the global marketplace of education thanks to its independence from government interference, an embrace of free speech and a principled pursuit of diversity. Those values have empowered us to attract the best and brightest students, professors and researchers from around the world.

The AGB Council of Board Chairs is a group of 25 to 30 leaders of member college and university boards of trustees from around the United States who meet quarterly to obtain information on pressing current topics and engage in an exchange of ideas with fellow board chairs.

AGB’s Council of Board Chairs and Council of Presidents held in-person meetings recently at the National Conference on Trusteeship in San Diego. The meetings—open to all board chairs and vice-chairs and all presidents and chancellors participating in the NCT—were well attended.
Board Oversight of Institutional Performance
“Board Oversight of Institutional Performance” was the topic of the February 8 meeting of the AGB Council of Board Chairs. Few areas of focus could be more critical in terms of board governance practices and captures the sentiments with which AGB CEO Henry Stoever opened the zoom meeting. The discussion questions framing the session were the following: • What evidence should boards seek regarding their institution’s – Educational quality? – Financial sustainability? – Governance integrity?

Dismaying disarray in higher ed breeds unneeded uncertainty - The Nevada Independent
As someone who spent 18 years on the Nevada Board of Regents in various leadership roles, including three terms as chair, I am disheartened by the public state of disarray the Nevada System of Higher Education leadership team is experiencing. Without weighing in on any culpability, which I am not qualified to assess, but having stayed active at the national level in higher education governance, I can speak to the cost of such public and rancorous vetting of internal disputes.
Political intrusion is threatening higher education governance (opinion)
It could be said that boards of trustees are the worst form of higher education governance except for all others, to play off the famous Churchill quote about democracy. The truism that democracy is messy can apply to governing boards as well. Currently, our time-tested form of higher education governance is under strain from politically polarized elements of society that see the nation’s colleges and universities as places to advance a conservative political agenda.
Community colleges deserve our support
Nevada State College. Public domain image. Nevada’s community colleges have never been given the full support and recognition they deserve, largely a consequence of being subsumed in a system that is dominated by the state’s two universities. Universities will always be center stage in such a hybrid mix, with community colleges occupying the second row. Community colleges can’t compete for funding and backing in such an arrangement and would be better served under a separate governing board.
Jill Derby: Don’t throw our elders under the bus
In the midst of the tumultuous events shaping the 2020 landscape, there is an uncomfortable sense of disconnect emerging between how we thought of ourselves as Americans and who we are discovering ourselves to be in the face of so much stress and disruption in our lives.

Billionaires who give back deserve our appreciation | Jill Derby
OPINION Jill Derby Published 6:00 a.m. PT Jan. 28, 2020 Tom Steyer speaks with the Register's editorial board Nov. 1, 2019. Des Moines Register Subscribe: Get local news and views with a subscription to RGJ.com, starting at just 99 cents a month I have read criticism lately of billionaires choosing to run for office simply because they are billionaires. Jill Derby: How can we compete with China?
I recently returned from a trip to southeastern China, taking a bullet train well into China's rural interior, followed by a lengthy bus ride to a Dong village — one of China's many areas with ethnic minorities. The infrastructure along the way at every turn was stunning. From the 300 km/hour ultra modern bullet train, to the freeways, the highways, the rural roads, the bridges, the train stations, all of it — amazing.
Uniquely American
A key element of the American model of higher education is the tradition of independent governing boards—boards of citizen trustees, operating democratically in a governance and fiduciary role, with sufficient autonomy to ensure that the board itself controls the operational and academic integrity of the institution.
