Saturday Morning Gaming: My Favorite Game This Year
As much as I loved the Spider-Man game, and as much as I adored Red Dead Redemption this year (and think that both games are very much worth your time and worth getting a PS4 for), the game that has eaten up the most of my time this year has been a little indy game called “Cultist Simulator”.
How To Survive An Encounter With The Police
Amber Guyger killed Botham Jean last Thursday. She entered his apartment, apparently having confused it for her own; Guyger and Jean lived in the same apartment complex, although they lived on different floors. Guyger had parked on the wrong floor, leading her to the wrong front door, and discovered that it was unlocked. When she encountered somebody moving around inside, she assumed she was being burglarized and shot twice, hitting Jean once.
The Magic of Ben Shapiro
Ben Shapiro recently tackled the firing of Kevin Williamson from The Atlantic via a Twitter rant. He expanded on his tweets in a National Review column. Shapiro’s thread made me want to do a deep dive into his archive of writing, which isn’t an easy task given how prolific Shapiro is as a writer. As a disclaimer, I disagree with most of Shapiro’s political views, but the columns I’m going to highlight are ones that stood out in the context of his tweets.
Rudolph the Rad Knows Reign, Dear
Rudy Giuliani hired a ghostwriter to produce the requisite manifesto, “Don’t Say You Weren’t Warned,” for Foreign Affairs magazine. It’s full of lies, oversimplifications and vagueness, but makes up for all that by being very, very tedious.
Why Lanier Middle School should keep a Confederate's name
Why Lanier Middle School should keep a Confederate's name Houston ISD trustees will vote this evening whether to rename eight schools named after Confederate leaders and soldiers. Among the eight is Lanier Middle School, named after poet Sidney Lanier. Jim Henley, a former Lanier teacher, posted an open letter to the HISD board on his Facebook page.
Libertarianism and Liberalism: What Went Wrong
Since the general theme of this blog is an anti-authoritarian entente–or even coalition–of diverse liberal and libertarian elements, one question that comes to mind is: “What are the most objectionable features of both establishment libertarianism, and establishment liberalism, from the standpoint of achieving such a coalition?” 1. The problem with mainstream libertarianism is its almost total departure from its radical roots.
David Ryan | Ordinary Times
- The problem in trying to find some sort of logical middle ground is that, once again, one side absolutely refuses to cede any ground *at all*. For example, here's something that the GCAs and GRAs should, in theory , both be behind: Cracking down on straw purchases. They are *already* illegal, at the Federal level and usually at the state also, and they are fairly easy to catch people at... ...unless, of course, you deliberately underfund the agency in charge of catching them.
Unqualified Offerings
Ken Burnside writes the best “pro-Puppy” retrospective on the Hugo Awards that I’ve seen. It’s frank about the pain he felt from the way some people treated him during the controversy but impressively free of bitterness. The piece is long, but what interests me most is something he doesn’t quite say, and possibly doesn’t quite realize. Here’s what he does say, about what he identifies as the “Heroic Engineer” genre, also known as competence porn: Let’s zero in on the last sentence.
"Mos Howard Considers the Death of His Brother, Curly" by Jim Henley, Chronicles, July 1994
The Search/Browse fields, including Title, Author, Period, and Publication, located near the top of many pages serve a dual role. As information is entered, the various various Cloud fields and any Listing dynamically readjust to reflect the filtering, with e.g. an Author Cloud displaying only those Authors whose names correspond to the letters in the Author field, and the publication Listing filtered by the letters in the Title field.
Anarchy, State and the Squidger*
From comments downblog, frankly speculative musing that may even count as libertarian “bashing,” finally vindicating Radley Balko’s accusation all these months later. But it might just be excuse-making. What I’m wondering is whether “libertarian” is an inevitably temporary political outlook. The answer must surely be No, right?
