Superintendent Marty Pollio deserves grace. Despite critics, he has done great things for JCPS.
In today’s culture, it’s easier than ever to criticize people when they make a mistake. Doubly so if that person happens to be a public official. The snarky opinion piece, the nasty tweet, the hateful Facebook post—we’ve all seen them. But how do we expect to get great public leadership, to have big things accomplished when big things are needed— if we’re going to tear down people for every mistake?
Guest Point of View | Why you should vote 'Yes 4 JCPS'
Papa John's is an international brand, built in Louisville, by Louisvillians. Now they're moving their headquarters to Georgia, citing Atlanta's deep and diverse talent pool. What does that say about Louisville's talent pool? This should be a wake-up call. Louisville must improve educational outcomes. Business leaders of all political stripes are backing Yes 4 JCPS. This issue on the ballot will help our schools move ahead. For too long, students who need more support haven't gotten it.
Turn to Lean To Tackle the Problems You Want to Solve Right Now
The doctor entered with a comforting bedside manner. We small talked. She asked about my work and I answered, in short. “Lean? You mean that Toyota thing?” In spite of the mask, I could read ‘Oh Brother’ on her face. “Yeah, we tried that here.” I had just sat for twenty minutes in a small waiting room with three other people, one of whom kept coughing, even though I’d timed my arrival to avoid exactly that. And soon, the doctor and an assistant would spend five minutes searching for a pack of ice.
Opinion: Papa John's departure is a wake-up call. We must invest in JCPS to grow business
Papa John’s is a homegrown company, founded right here in Metro Louisville and built into an international brand by native and adopted Louisvillians. This week, it announced it’s moving its headquarters to Georgia — because it needs the “deep talent pool” of Atlanta workers to continue to grow. The implication about Louisville’s workforce should be deeply troubling to everyone in our city. This is our wake-up call. We must start investing in education.
What If Elon Musk Took Manufacturing Cars Seriously?
Tesla is one of the most amazing success, and failure, stories in the history of automotive. There were a good many mavericks who tried to revolutionize auto, only to fail dramatically, such as the Tucker 48. But Tesla was even more bold, forging a new automotive segment, and just as it appears to be headed for free fall it magically rises to a new level of performance. The ups and downs of its stock price are also becoming legendary.

Rethinking the Model Line
It was love at first sight. The first time I met a model line I fell in love with it. In 1993 I was on a tour at a grimy car-parts factory in the US Midwest with Toyota TSSC advisors, who exposed me to the concept of the model line, which was pioneered in the late 1960s by Taiichi Ohno and the team he created to spread the Toyota production philosophy throughout the Toyota supplier group in Japan.

The state education commissioner will soon release the audit of Jefferson County Public Schools and provide Louisville with the most comprehensive examination of our school district yet. When released, the results will help us understand the challenges that face JCPS and how we can ensure our district better serves all students.

It's Not All About the Cash: How to Help Leadership Understand Lean's Financial Benefits
C: Why do so many senior leaders have such a hard time understanding lean’s financial benefits? Hi, I’m Chet Marchwinski, Communications Director for the Lean Enterprise Institute. And today I’m joined by a CFO who can give us some tips on how to explain those benefits to senior officials. The Lean Bakery
Follow the Learner: The Lean Bakery is an quick, entertaining story about a successful bakery and cafe business in Barcelona, Spain. They supply over 100 cafés (shops) daily with freshly baked bread and products, from a small 7,000 sq. ft. factory. The owner and author, Juan Antonio Tena faced a capacity crises in 2005. He thought he needed more factory space and freezers to grow from 6 to 9 shops. But this expansion project was going to be very expensive and would put his entire business at risk.
Ask Art: Is there a formula to predict or evaluate the success of a lean implementation?
This is a great question with many implications. Most people need some way to define success numerically; but what are the right metrics to look at? The ultimate goal for anyone running a business is to increase enterprise value. This still leaves you with the question of “as compared to what?”, and even then, the question remains: is it good enough? Or, should the result have been even higher if I did a better job on my companies’ lean turnaround?
