Another View: Statewide network would improve floodplains
By Jim Provenza, Gary Sandy and Robin Kulakow In California’s contentious water battles, finding points of agreement is a challenging task as diverse interests compete for a steadily dwindling, essential natural resource. By pulling together these diverse interests, we found a way to make progress towards improving what is arguably California’s hardest-working floodplain, the 60,000-acre Yolo Bypass.
WDAAC is worth backing
Please join us in voting Yes on Measure L. It fulfills important needs and fits well in the proposed location. The Davis community has an increasing proportion of seniors; we are experiencing our own “silver tsunami.” As Yolo County supervisors we have heard three consistent needs when it comes to seniors: housing, transportation and health care. The West Davis Active Adult Neighborhood/Measure L addresses these three needs and provides a wide range of housing choices for future residents.
Public safety cannot be an afterthought
As Yolo County supervisors, we are committed to public safety, cultivating new job opportunities and preserving our agriculture land. Since 2011, we have served on a board subcommittee actively working with the federal Indian Health Service as it has sought to build a 40,000-square-foot Youth Regional Treatment Center on County Road 31 between Davis and Winters in Yolo County.
Help prevent child abuse by supporting family resilience
In the words of C. Everett Koop, M.D., “Life affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege, than the raising of the next generation.” As we think about how much we all want the children of today to become the healthy, productive and happy adults of tomorrow, let us think about how important it is to support parents and caregivers in the incredibly challenging job that they have of raising children.
Remember Sgt. Owen when you vote on Prop. 57
Before you vote on Proposition 57, please take a moment to think about Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Owen. Four weeks ago, Sgt. Owen responded to a burglary call at an apartment building. It had been placed by a woman who heard a loud noise downstairs and saw a broken glass door. She ran upstairs to her bedroom where she waited with her 7-month-old baby for officers to arrive. Shortly thereafter, she heard gunshots, looked out her bedroom window and saw Sgt. Owen lying face down, motionless.
Quality preschool puts kids on the right path
In Yolo County, 69 percent of third-graders from low-income families (and 54 percent of all third-graders) are reading below grade level. According to First 5 California, “Research shows that students who start off behind tend to stay behind. Meanwhile, those who enter school properly prepared are 10 times more likely to meet state standards on third-grade standardized tests.” Children who do not read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
The longterm benefits of preschool education
In Yolo County 69 percent of students from low-income families (and 54 percent of all students) are reading below grade level in third grade. According to First 5 California, “Research shows that students who start off behind tend to stay behind. Meanwhile, those who enter school properly prepared are 10 times more likely to meet state standards on 3rd grade standardized tests.” Children who do not read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
We all can help raise happy, healthy children
As Nelson Mandela once said, “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” While parents clearly have the primary role in nurturing children, all of us can help strengthen families and assist parents in raising healthy, happy and thriving adults. We can all protect children from adversity and trauma by committing to supporting strong families and preventing child abuse and neglect. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
