Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job as a Journalist was in 2000. I worked as a Sportscaster at The Score, a national Canadian TV network.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

YES! Throughout high school and early university. I had to borrow one from an elderly neighbour.

How is social media changing news?

Social media is changing news in a way that's forcing all of us to think more discerningly to filter out what's real and what could be untru.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Hmm, don't really have one.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Respect, integrity, authenticity, truth!

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Canva, Zoom. iMovie.

What's your favorite social network?

YouTube. Original, versatile, personal.

Who do you wish followed you?

I wish only people who believe as much as humility, compassion and true perspective as I do to follow me. Otherwise, nobody specific.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a Journalist because I love getting personal with people, telling stories that hit the soul of people worldwide.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I didn't work for my high school newspaper, but, I was a DJ and Station Manager at the University of Toronto.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The story about my Dad abandoning my Mom and I when I was 2, and how that led me to run the Athens Marathon at 40. Long story.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get your mind set for constant rejection, and make sure that stay humble.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime. Travel, food, and culture never sleep!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

One week in Northern Mexico, at a resort/spa, during their annual culinary week! Sun, soak, full stomach!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

There are no bad pitches. Different pitches from different people with different passions. Nothing wrong with that.

What's your favorite drink?

Ouzo with ice.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Road Tripping! Eating! Living!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

There are a few, including The Globe and Mail, AP, World Footprints, and Nat Geo.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

I don't travel for the sake of bragging to my friends and colleagues. I travel to experience, and tell others they can experience to.
