Numerous Cherokee artists, curators, and scholars have responded to the traveling retrospective "Jimmie Durham: At the Center of the World," organized by the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and on view now at Walter Art Center in Minneapolis (through October 8), with renewed calls to clarify that the artist is not a member of the Cherokee nation.
Organized by the highly acclaimed Acoma Pueblo poet and writer Simon J. Ortiz , this event features Ortiz alongside prominent writers Allison Adelle Hedge Coke and Orlando White , who are actively engaged with indigenous life and culture. Writers will read from Jimmie Durham’s poetry, fiction, and essays as well as their own writing.
