This winter, taste what’s truly delicious about Central Indiana with the second-annual Hendricks County Flavor Fest.

Beasley's Orchard: Fall Fun and Family Roots
|In Things to Do, Food Trends Nestled just outside of Indianapolis in Danville, Beasley’s Orchard is a beloved fall hotspot that marries Hoosier heritage with modern agriculture. Known for its crisp apples, legendary cider, and a whole host of family fun, this third-generation family farm has become a must-visit destination each autumn, and beyond. The farm that is now Beasley’s Orchard began in 1946 when Milton and Irene Beasley purchased the original 80-acre property.
Pie for Pi Day: Four Pie Recipes to Make at Home
Pi day, a math-centric holiday originally celebrated by enthusiastic geometry teachers, has now also been co-opted by the pie-baking community as a welcome excuse for a savory or sweet slice in the Ides of March. In celebration of all things circular, we’ve collected four recipes for your pi(e) day celebrations. Some of these recipes require shortcrust. We would recommend that you use this recipe for your pie crust.
RECIPE: Orange Espresso Chocolate Pie
This silky chocolate pie’s elegance belies its simplicity. Elevated with fresh orange zest, almond extract, and espresso powder, the only truly challenging part of this pie recipe is ensuring your chocolate is cool enough to not collapse the whipped cream and spoil your efforts. We promise the wait is worthwhile.
Recipe: Four Berry Pie
1 pastry crust, plus extra for lattice top 7 cups fresh or frozen raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries (about 1¾ cups of each kind of berry) 1 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 4 tablespoons cornstarch ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground cardamom 2 tablespoons butter 1 egg white Turbinado sugar for dusting Preheat the oven to 425°F and roll out dough for crust, placing it into a (9-inch) deep-dish pie pan.
Recipe for Mushroom & Leek Pot Pie
32 ounces mushrooms, sliced (I used portobello, along with a blend of crimini, shiitake and oyster) 1 large leek, sliced in ¼-inch disks 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for brushing on crust 3 tablespoons sherry 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1½ cups vegetable broth ½ cup heavy cream 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard Salt and pepper, to taste Dried thyme, rosemary and sage, to taste 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (or use our pie crust recipe here) Preheat the oven to 350°F and set puff pastry aside...
RECIPE: The Hooseier Amaretto Sugar Cream Pie of Your Dreams
This rich, tasty twist on the classic Indiana state pie will be a new family favorite. Though you can blind-bake your crust and fully cook the filling on the stovetop, I prefer the sugary crunch that develops on the pie when the filling is thickened only a minute or two, then baked in the oven along with the crust. Either method is acceptable, but the instructions below are for the latter.
RECIPE: Classic Pastry Crust
This crust is delicate and flaky, yet quick and relatively easy to prepare. It responds best to as little handling as can be managed. 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 pinches sugar ¼ pound chilled butter, cut into small pieces 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening 5 tablespoons cold water Combine all ingredients except water in a bowl and mix until fats are distributed evenly throughout. It will have a sandy texture at this point.

Cozy Up with These Four Must-Try Dark Beers in Indianapolis Fall is upon us, and there’s just something fitting about a dark beer this time of year. Though it is nearly always my beverage of choice, I understand it may not be everyone’s cup of tea year-round. But when air cools and the nights grow longer, we instinctively reach for something soothing, and I find there’s a comforting quality about the rich roastiness of a great stout or porter.
