Noncoding DNA sequence may play a role in ageing and cancer
Noncoding DNA sequence may play a role in ageing and cancer 2 August 2021 Appeared in BioNews 1106 A sequence of repetitive noncoding DNA that varies considerably in length between humans, has been shown to play a role in ageing and cancer. An international group of scientists looked at a region of DNA called VNTR2-1. They found deleting this region reduced tumour growth and contributed to cell ageing.
Self-renewal ability of blood stem cells identified
Self-renewal ability of blood stem cells identified 1 February 2021 Appeared in BioNews 1081 The pathway that allows blood stem cells to hibernate, and therefore repeatedly renew themselves, has been revealed. Researchers at the German Cancer Centre (DKFZ) and the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM), both in Heidelberg, Germany, have found the factors involved in the blood stem cell hibernation of mice.
Noncoding DNA helps regulate our body clock
Noncoding DNA helps regulate our body clock 11 January 2021 Appeared in BioNews 1078 Circadian rhythms rely on more than just 'clock genes' to produce proteins crucial in controlling the daily sleep/wake cycles of biological organisms, according to new research. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) are also important genome-wide regulators of the circadian clock.
Does 'junk DNA' play a role in stem cell differentiation?
Does 'junk DNA' play a role in stem cell differentiation? 20 July 2020 Appeared in BioNews 1056 A part of the human genome derived from viral RNA has been shown to play a major role in inducing stem cells to become neurons. The study, conducted by researchers at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), focused on human endogenous retroviruses (HERV), which are segments of the human genome that originated in viruses and were incorporated into human DNA over millions of years.
