Depression rates rise among teens
According to the CDC, there has been a 60% increase in U.S. teen girls and a 30% increase in U.S. teen boys’ feelings of persistent sadness or hopelessness in 2021 compared to the last highest level reported in the decade. Unfortunately, from 2022 to 2023, the numbers have increased by 9.43%. Junior Prerena Dilip had experienced depression since 7th grade and was diagnosed in the second semester of sophomore year.
With friends? Or with a date?
On the second to last day to send in permission slips and buy tickets for prom, junior Nikolas Margaritis found himself buying a ticket just before they sold out. Persuaded by his friends to attend, Margaritis’s focus at prom was simply to have fun with his friends. “My whole friend group decided to go, and I was the only one that was going to be left out, and I didn’t want to do that, so I just signed up,” Margaritis said.
Protection against school violence
In January of 2023, a 6-year-old boy reportedly shot his teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport, Virginia. The Associated Press concludes that there were prior behavioral issues in the boy and he had trouble interacting with students and teachers, leading to the shooting. He also cursed at staff and teachers, whipped students with his belt and choked another teacher “until she couldn’t breathe,” the attorney of the wounded teacher said.
Exploring the effect of CAASPP on FUHSD students and staff

Every year, MVHS juniors take the test over one week, with each day allocated to language arts, math, or science. Last year, the CAASPP occurred from Monday through Wednesday, March 21 to March 23, where a few hours were allocated from the school day to administer the test.
Break from convention
How my perspective on public speaking changed I never viewed myself as a public speaker. With online speech tournaments lacking any substance, performing my speech felt like a burden, reducing my 10-minute speech (which I couldn’t care any less about) to just a green light signaling my camera was on at the top of my laptop. It was still dark outside, and while my parents were asleep in the other room, I was awake trying to rememorize a quote by some guy named Zak Slayback.
