Is Linus Torvalds Vibe Coding?
It's fairly well known that Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, has made public his stance on using AI to help in the debugging of the Linux kernel…he's all for it. But until now, the use of AI was limited to that task. Now, it seems, Torvalds has decided to use AI in the development of new kernel features. His tool of choice: Claude Code.

Ubuntu Stonking Stingray Gets Even Rustier
Ubuntu 26.10 has completed its migration to the Rust-based coreutils. Back in 2025, Canonical began its push toward a full-blown Rustification of the coreutils package (which contains around 100 standard Linux command-line tools, such as chgrp, chmod, chown, cp, dd, df, du, ln, ls, mkdir, mv, pwd, rm, rmdir, and touch), but there were hiccups.
AI Fixes Linux Bottlenecks Using “Hideous” Code
Most people assume AI makes life easier. Sometimes, that's the case – other times, not so much. Such was the case when Linux developer Lorenzo Stoakes of Arm decided to fix a few single-thread bottlenecks that caused a typical kernel build to "consist of a frustratingly large amount of time," Stoakes reported in a kernel.org email.
Advanced Video Coding Still Under Patent
A 25-year-old patent for the "process for storing and processing image information from successive images over time" has expired, which means Linux distributions like Fedora no longer have to instruct users to download the necessary software to run certain video and audio files. Huzzah, right? Sort of. The patent in question covers MPEG-4 Part 14 (more commonly known as the MP4 file format).
2,000 Vulnerabilities per Linux Release
Imagine being a kernel developer, knowing that AI is now discovering over 2,000 bugs for every release. On the kernel.org site, main developer Greg Kroah-Hartman shared a slide showing how the number of vulnerabilities has increased from kernel 6.9 to kernel 7.2. At the end of the 6.9 development cycle, the kernel was seeing around 500 vulnerabilities discovered per release.
Linux Exempt from California’s Age Verification Law
The California legislature has passed Assembly Bill 1856, which will take effect January 1, 2027. That bill clearly states, “‘Operating system provider’ does not mean a person or entity that distributes an operating system or application under license terms that permit a recipient to copy, redistribute, and modify the software.” In other words, if an OS license allows a user to copy, redistribute, or modify the software, it is exempt.
Roll Out the Cake: Linux Turns 35
"Hello, this is Linus Torvalds, and I pronounce Linux, Linux." I remember it well. Any time I would install Linux in the early days, there was that audio file of Linus Torvalds telling me how to pronounce Linux. Even back then, I knew Linux would become something big. But did I know that, after 35 years of existence, it would pretty much run everything from a refrigerator to Amazon?
