Wajib review – A culturally rich look at life inside a Palestinian family
Jacir proves more interested in the way Palestinians live in spite of Israeli rule than in the specifics of state oppression. This quietly compelling drama from Annemarie Jacir follows a father and son delivering wedding invitations. Annemarie Jacir’s new feature is aptly titled – ‘Wajib’ is an Arabic term referring to a mandatory duty that will get you punished if you ignore it. As such, the film deals with the complexities of living in – and leaving – a city like Nazareth.

Hey Hollywood, it’s time to stop stereotyping Arabs
Last week, the world looked on in horror as reports came in of Donald Trump calling Haiti, El Salvador and a number of African countries “shitholes”. The word shithole itself continues to look odd plastered across the pages of respectable media outlets.

Art can offer a way in, providing a concentrated point from which to approach an incomprehensible, intimidating whole. Shubbak, meaning ‘window’ in Arabic – a “multi-arts, multi-disciplinary festival that looks to give different images of the Arab world reflected by artists from the region itself” – serves to offer precisely this, a frame to look through.

Over the next year, about 100 workers would be laid off, including Charles. “Nobody saw this coming,” he recalled about the reactions to the layoff announcement.

New Jersey native Anthony “AJ” Korski wanted to join the Navy after graduating from high school, but his plans were derailed by ACL surgery. Over the next few years, he mostly worked a number of retail jobs, often residing on a friend or family member’s sofa. Making Sure Hard Work Pays Off
For eight years, German Gomez says virtually all he did was work and sleep. As a manager at Grill Kabob, he worked grueling 12-hour shifts six to seven days a week at three restaurants in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The kabob chain grew quickly across the region, with Gomez helping to open two locations. But this growth did not extend to his wages. German took home a measly $450 a week, and never received overtime pay.
