Joanna Chiu is a Beijing-based correspondent covering China, Mongolia and Hong Kong for Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) international news wire.
She also contributes to publications including The Economist, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera America , The Associated Press, The Daily Beast, GlobalPost and The Nation.
Previously, in Hong Kong, she worked as a staff reporter at the South China Morning Post and as a stringer for The Economist and The Associated Press.
She additionally provides commentary and on the ground reporting for broadcast outlets including BBC World Service, Al Jazeera, CTV and NPR.
Joanna is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the University of British Columbia, where she studied Chinese history.
