Edge computing is about to solve the IoT’s biggest problems
2021 will showcase the real power of distributed computing, with significant processing taking place not in centralised servers in the cloud, but on the “edge” of the network, where much of the data we rely on is generated. This will deliver big gains, not only in computing, but also in the lives of the increasing number of people who will be connected to the power of the internet as a result. Edge computing will be crucial to the success of the Internet of Things (IoT).
Top Takeaways From The Economist Innovation Summit
Over the past few years, the word ‘innovation’ has degenerated into something of a buzzword. In fact, according to Vijay Vaitheeswaran, US business editor at The Economist, it’s one of the most abused words in the English language. The word is over-used precisely because we’re living in a great age of invention. But the pace at which those inventions are changing our lives is fast, new, and scary.
Making Superhumans Through Radical Inclusion and Cognitive Ergonomics
Imagine trying to read War and Peace one letter at a time. The thought alone feels excruciating. But in many ways, this painful idea holds parallels to how human-machine interfaces (HMI) force us to interact with and process data today. Designed back in the 1970s at Xerox PARC and later refined during the 1980s by Apple, today’s HMI was originally conceived during fundamentally different times, and specifically, before people and machines were generating so much data.
Cybernetics and the design of the user experience of AI systems
Authors: Nikolas Martelaro, Wendy Ju Cybernetics and artificial intelligence (AI) are often considered the same thing, with cybernetics having something to do with creating intelligent cyborgs and robots. In actuality, cybernetics and AI are different ways of thinking about intelligent systems or systems that can act toward reaching a goal. AI is primarily concerned with making computers mimic intelligent behavior based on stored representations of the world.
How to Leverage the Power of Science Fiction for Exponential Innovation
“The only constant is change, and the rate of change is increasing.” –Peter Diamandis Many of today’s biggest companies will no longer exist in 10 years. Why? Because rapidly emerging new technologies will make the problems they’ve spent their history solving obsolete. Too often solutions are limited to ideas that can easily be shown to incrementally solve existing business goals. Crazy ideas, projects, or initiatives that don’t fit into the mold get rejected.
Real-world VR applications beyond entertainment
Over the course of 20 years, Jody’s human-driven design practice has placed her at the bleeding frontier of new user interfaces, research, and development. As the barriers between people and technology dissolve, Jody’s grasp on physical narrative and the power of “speaking human” serves as a natural lens by which to transform everything from healthcare to virtual reality. Prior to joining Leap Motion, she served as a principal experience designer on Microsoft’s Analog Platform.
Move over GUI, now's the time for the Intelligent User Interface
iStock Our Human Machine Interface (HMI) is broken. Designed in 1973 at Xerox PARC, the technology waits for a demand from the human before responding, and then guides them to push the buttons in the right order to activate technology inside a computational box. At the time, the graphical user interface (GUI) model worked very well. Most interactions with computers involved advanced computation and language processing, tasks most likely to be done seated at a desk or table with a keyboard.
It's Time Technology Gets Out of the Way
You have superpowers; cybernetic superpowers that allow you to do all kinds of things. Think about it: at some point today you Googled a fact you didn’t know, or your calendar reminded you to be somewhere. The other day, I watched a YouTube video on how to tie a bowtie—while tying my husband’s. I felt kinda like Trinity. In all these situations, technology is superpowering my ability to do something better, faster, or more consistently than I otherwise could.
