Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Associate Content Director and Social Media Manager at STACK Media.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I would love to again! Something about the texture and the sound...

How is social media changing news?

It's allowing people like me to more easily find sources for international stories, like Yemen, Costa Rica and Nigeria.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Henry Hackett... I just love Michael Keaton.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Everything. It's a huge responsibility that isn't for those seeking glamour, yet can be incredibly rewarding in its own way.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Can't think of one of the top of my head... I'm sure it involved Sarah Palin at some point.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Social media, internet, Final Cut Pro, Garmin VIRB, Nikon S9300.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, for reasons I stated earlier. It allows me to connect with international sources.

Who do you wish followed you?

Charlie Chaplin. But that seems rather impossible at the moment.

Why did you become a journalist?

I enjoy telling stories, both in the written word and in video.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. I started writing opinion pieces for my university's weekly alternative.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

"Modern Enlightenment," my travel documentary on how the Tibetan culture is surviving in exile.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be persistent in your goals and thoughtful in your approach to stories.

When's the best time to pitch you?

When I'm not traveling.
