Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
As a freelancer with Lancashire-based Talking Rugby Union.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I cannot say that I have. I would not mind giving it a go though.
How is social media changing news?
I think it has made the desire for news more immediate.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Rita Skeeter from Harry Potter has always stood out. So far removed from reality but asking the exact questions you expect.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means that you have to convey the thoughts of others in a balanced way in order to allow readers to make up their own opinions.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
There isn't one in particular, I just like it when the public take something seemingly insignificant and it trends in a big way.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is a lot easier for me.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
There are too many to list.
What's your favorite social network?
Has to be Instagram.
Who do you wish followed you?
England and Newcastle Falcons' Mark Wilson. Wonderful man whenever we have spoken.
Why did you become a journalist?
I always enjoyed writing and telling stories. Plus, rugby is my favourite sport. It was the perfect storm.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I wrote a couple of blogs for the school website, but never anything significant.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
The 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup in England.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
To practice and development as much as you can.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Any time of day is acceptable to me.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
From The Sportsman, who wanted me to preview each Autumn Nations Cup fixture.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Pitches that don't fully outline what is wanted for a piece. That makes life difficult.
What's your favorite drink?
I love a pour over coffee.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Usually exploring local coffee shops.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
A bit of an obvious answer, but the BBC is always my go to if I'm looking for anything to read.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That everything has to be about professional rugby. I've reported on plenty of community games over the years.
