Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paying job was with Central Michigan Life, the student newspaper in college. The first salaried job was with Thoroughbred Times.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Until sophomore year of high school, I typed my papers on an electric typewriter.

How is social media changing news?

It's eliminated the need for letters to the editor. Whether this is a net gain remains to be seen.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Always having the cool story at any gathering.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via hologram.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram

Why did you become a journalist?

I enjoyed writing, but knew I'd never make it all the way to an English degree as long as the required Shakespeare class was held at 8 a.m.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. It was part of the yearbook class. It was used as much as a napkin at lunch as it was reading material. We shifted segments each week.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

"Finding Charley," without question. I've never worked as hard on anything in my life, and its reception was very rewarding.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Find that one thing that you never run out of words for and write about that. Then be persistent, patient, and good at what you do.

What's your favorite drink?

Barq's Root Beer
