2023 Predictions: Pressure to drive Realignment & Speedy IX Solutions
Every year, LNS Research analysts put forth predictions around the Industrial Transformation (IX) topics where we focus our research. In January 2022, I made only one prediction – but it was in four parts. This year I see 3 interrelated trends. To help you to decide whether my 2023 is worth considering, I have wrapped up this blog post with an assessment of how I did on my 2022 predictions (hint: by my count, I was 4 of 4 but you can decide).
Challenges That Matter: Top Three Reasons Industrial Analytics Fail
Advanced Industrial Analytics programs are at a pivotal stage in today’s manufacturing industry. LNS’ latest Analytics That Matter research shows that a third of recently surveyed industrial companies have fully engaged in Advanced Analytics programs, and almost twice as many are running pilots or have budgeted to do so within the next 12 months.
Honeywell’s Living on the Edge with a Rock-n-Roll Strategy
Honeywell Connect puts on a show for Executives using classic Rock-and-Roll Orlando was the spot for the 45th Honeywell Users Conference (HUG) in June and the maiden Honeywell Connected Enterprise (HCE) flagship in-person event in November. Recent changes have brought in new leadership and a new Life Science growth strategy to rebuild the industrial software provider brand.
Cost of Quality in the Digital Age
To borrow the phrase from Philip Crosby, Quality is Free. The book, by the same name, was published in 1978, well before the Industrial Digital Age. It laid out the case for a different view of Quality’s mission and how to achieve many of the ideals that Quality Leaders were (and still are) looking for. Among them; Zero Defects. Economic Conformance There are two competing views of cost behavior around Quality in business. The first is called the Economic Conformance Model (ECM).

What We've Got Here is Failure to Communicate
We've all seen the headline, "70% of Transformation Projects Fail." This staggering statistic is based on years of LNS Research's work in Industrial Transformation (IX) and is consistent with what other firms and academia have found. To reverse this trend and make real improvements, business leaders need to understand why we're seeing such dismal results.
Learn from Failing Workforce Initiatives to Build Manufacturing Talent
Clinging to existing practices has intensified workforce challenges, forcing the C-suite executives burning platform to focus on human capital. Unfortunately, "The Great Goodbye" continues to negatively impact operational performance with the hemorrhaging of manufacturing talent. Eighty-seven percent of manufacturers are pursuing Future of Industrial Work (FOIW) initiatives, but only 37% of programs have delivered corporate value.
The Emerson - AspenTech Merger and the Need for Speed
On May 16, 2022, Emerson Electric Company and Aspen Technology announced the closing of their $11B merger which brings together much of Emerson’s industrial software businesses (OSI Inc. and Geological Simulation Software) with AspenTech to create the “new AspenTech” as a global industrial software provider. With the close of the transaction, Emerson owns 55% of the new AspenTech and AspenTech shareholders own the remaining 45%.
Round Holes/Square Pegs: Artificial Barriers to Transformation Success
Transformation is challenging for industrial organizations. Manufacturers face genuine barriers to deploying new digital technologies specifically and realizing benefits from Industrial Transformation (IX). Software vendors face equally daunting obstacles in trying to help manufacturers achieve IX success. Software vendors face a myriad of hurdles in marketing, selling, and deploying software.
Rub-A-Dub-Dub...It's All About the Data Hub
Productized connectivity to many advanced analytics platforms and visualization applications. Pre-packaged applications for various use cases, typically visualization at a minimum. The ability to upload historian asset hierarchies, e.g., AVEVA PI AF The ability to scan P&ID diagrams and capture the tag data and associated attributes. The ability to read so-called Smart P&IDs and capture their data. The ability to overlay data on 3D engineering diagrams.
The M&A Rumble in the Jungle
Four recent M&A announcements have prompted us to catch up on our view of where the industry is heading and follow up on our earlier predictions for 2021. They are: SparkCognition's acquisition of Maana a leading digital knowledge platform company (acquisition value not published). The acquisition of smart manufacturing supplier Plex Systems, Inc.® for $2.22 billion by Rockwell Automation®.
Podcast: Remote and Autonomous Operations
In advance of a May 20 webinar, Roadmap to the Autonomous Plant, I had the opportunity to speak with Joe Perino, Principal Analyst with LNS Research. Joe will join Emerson’s Stuart Harris, Group President Digital Transformation and Mart Berutti, Vice President, Digital Transformation. In this podcast, Joe shared with me elements from some of his recent research, On the Road to Industrial Transformation (IX): Remote Operations & the Autonomous Plant.
Schneider Electric Innovation Summit: Connecting Industrial Ecosystems
LNS Research attended our first Schneider Electric Innovation Summit since 2019 last month. The event was held at the Paris Expo Center, and about 3,000 attendees were hosted, 2,000 of whom were customers and partners. While the attendance was down from the pre-Covid levels of 4,000-5,000, it was great to see so many Schneider enthusiasts come together.
A Crystal Ball for Collaborative Quality…Don’t Be Late to the Party!
The year 2030 is a top-of-mind strategic mile marker for manufacturers on the journey to Zero, with 2024 becoming a critical year for those navigating the fairly unpaved path. In our research, leaders view Industrial Transformations (IX) as a five-year (or more) journey. For a Collaborative Quality transformation, the average is longer, currently at seven years, with some taking as long as 11 years.
Edge Computing...Edging Ahead Slowly
LNS has been writing about Edge Computing now for a few years. We noted that the powerful wave of moving data to the Cloud for analysis and action overshadowed the Edge, but in the last two years, the trend has been to swing back to a hybrid architecture with both Edge and Cloud in the mix. In our new eBook, “Edge Computing in the New OT Ecosystem,” we talk in detail about the various roles, applications, and state of adoption of Edge Computing devices in what we call the New OT Ecosystem.
Veeva Systems Expands Their Impact in Boston
Veeva Systems recently hosted an in-person summit for the second time since the pandemic. As Veeva Systems usually does, this event was a joint R&D and Quality Summit in Boston on September 13 and 14. LNS Research was privileged to be able to attend this conference. The conference was well attended, with over 2,500 industry executives filling the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
Digital Performance Excellence is the engine of Digital Improvement
Excellence in operational execution is hard to maintain and grow and is getting more challenging by the day in this era of post-pandemic-related societal upheaval, geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, supply chain fluctuations, and environmental concerns. In an Industry 3.0 world, building a sustainable program for improvement experienced several barriers to entry. Continuous Improvement Management Systems from the Industry 3.0 era heavily emphasize policies, procedures, and people.
AVEVA PI World 2022: Promises, Pain Points, and Progress
AVEVA PI World 2022 celebrated the first in-person event in two years as a combined event this May with over 1,200 worldwide attendees, customers, and partner representatives. Around 160 AVEVA speakers and 70 customers provided Digital Transformation journey learnings with the Partner and Product Expo featuring 41 booths exhibiting AVEVA and sponsor technology. Bold space design and high energy lessened lower post-COVID attendance attention.
