Chancellor told to launch inheritance tax raid by AI
Launch an inheritance tax raid, tinker with capital gains tax (CGT) and introduce an annual property levy. These are the reforms John Healey will announce at his inaugural Budget this month – if he were to listen to AI chatbots. Posing as the Chancellor, The Telegraph asked large language models (LLMs) which taxes should be targeted to plug the £35bn hole in public finances. Inheritance tax was the area deemed most ripe for reform, according to AI platforms ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Will Carlos Baleba play for Man United vs. Fulham? Michael Carrick offers positive injury update on midfielder
Joe Wright This has been a torrid week for Manchester United, and certainly the worst since Michael Carrick took charge of the first team. After losing a controversial Manchester derby 1-0 at Old Trafford to 10-man Manchester City, United contrived to throw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup.
Help to Buy was 'very high value for money', audit finds
Help to Buy has been hailed for its “very high value for money” according to a government review, despite criticisms that the scheme excessively inflated house prices. An audit of the government equity loan scheme, designed to get first-time buyers on the housing ladder, praised the initiative for helping more than 300,000 people buy their first home, and generating an estimated £25bn on a £3bn cost.

How Charles II paved the way for Labour's 'mansion tax police'
The year is 1661, Cromwell's republic is finished and King Charles II of England is back on the throne. The returned monarch, whose father was executed just 12 years before, knows all too well the fate that can befall kings who divide the country. But he must bolster the national income to support the government of the restored Stuart monarchy, so he gives royal assent to what will become one of his most despised laws.

Birmingham moves to become England's first 20mph city
Birmingham is to become England's first 20mph city by lowering speed limits on the majority of its roads. In plans updated last week, the Liberal Democrat, Green Party and independent-led council said it wanted all routes except A-roads to become 20mph zones. The council said it wanted to ensure that cars “no longer dominate street life” by promoting walking and cycling as the best ways to travel.
London council to charge £60k+ households more tax
Tower Hamlets is offering lower-income households council tax discounts worth up to £216 per year under a two-tier system, The Telegraph can reveal. The London borough introduced a 4.99pc tax increase for all residents in April. However under its relief scheme, households that fall below the £60,000 earnings threshold will only have to shoulder a 2pc rise while the rest would pay the full amount.
55pc of Britain's mansion tax bill to be paid by just four London boroughs
Homeowners in just four London boroughs will cover more than half the cost of Labour's mansion tax bill, analysis shows. Residents in Richmond upon Thames, Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, and Wandsworth will pay £275m a year under the Government's plans to impose a surcharge on Britain's most expensive homes – equivalent to 55pc of the total amount the new levy is estimated to raise. The figures were published in a letter from council leaders to Chancellor John Healey.
Who is JJ Gabriel? Meet Man United prodigy tipped for breakout season under Michael Carrick
Manchester United have taken measures in recent years to improve the pathway from the academy to the first team and maintain the club's storied tradition of developing stars of the future. One such youngster is on the cusp of breaking into Michael Carrick's plans, and the club has not been so enthused by a prospect for some time. J.J. Gabriel has joined the senior side for training during early preseason and jetted off to Norway for the friendly game with Rosenborg on July 24.
La Liga top goal scorers 2025/26: Golden Boot rankings in Spain as Mbappe wins Pichichi
Joe Wright Kylian Mbappe endured a tough season in terms of team success at Real Madrid , but he was unparalleled in La Liga when it came to scoring goals. Microsoft Cares About Your Privacy Bryan Mbeumo handball vs. Nottingham Forest: Why Matheus Cunha's Man United goal stood despite VAR check
Joe Wright Another week, another moment of VAR controversy in the Premier League. Manchester United 's home game with Nottingham Forest may not have had much riding on it, with United's Champions League qualification and Forest's survival secured, but it was nonetheless a competitive game - and one that included a hugely contentious goal. With the scores at 1-1 in the second half, Bryan Mbeumo's blocked shot fell kindly to Matheus Cunha, who placed a composed finish into the bottom-right corner.

Joe Wright The 2026 World Cup will break new ground in more ways than one. Fittingly for a sports event taking place in North America, it will also be the first ever World Cup whose final will include a halftime show.
Microsoft Cares About Your Privacy When is Portugal World Cup roster announcement? Date, time of squad reveal and if Cristiano Ronaldo will play
Joe Wright Portugal are hoping 2026 could be their year when it comes to World Cup glory. The Selecao claimed third place in their tournament debut in 1966, but since then, they have never gone beyond the quarterfinal stage. Cristiano Ronaldo could feature in his sixth World Cup if he is selected for the tournament in North America, and while it would be a big shock if he were omitted from Roberto Martinez's plans, there are no absolute guarantees he will be involved at the age of 41.

La Liga top goal scorers 2025/26: Golden Boot rankings in Spain as Mbappe leads Pichichi rankings
Joe Wright Kylian Mbappe may have finished the 2024/25 season without a collective trophy at Real Madrid , but his first season in white can be considered an individual success as he ran away with the La Liga top goal scorer award. How Labour is abandoning England's rural drivers
Joe Wright In Dalwood, a Devon village at the foot of a sweeping valley in the Blackdown Hills, the village mechanic has never been busier. Punctures havebecome the norm, while road repairs hold up for a matter of weeks before they fall apart. “I've had three punctures since December,” says one villager, as they try to outscore another who's only had a measly two. The game of ‘Who's Paid More for Car Repairs' is a sorry reflection of what rural England has become.

Reeves's Brexit betrayal on customs union ‘will cost Britain £40bn a year'
Joe Wright Sir Keir Starmer's pivot to forging closer ties with the European Union would cost Britain £40bn a year, a think tank has claimed. But the Prosperity Institute claimed realigning with the EU was a “fatally flawed” policy and would cause significant damage to the economy.
