GMX login not possible? These tips will help

The GMX login fails, the service cannot be reached, Thunderbird does not pick up any mails - this is how you solve annoying login problems with the mail provider.

Wrong login name or wrong password
If the GMX login fails temporarily or apparently permanently, you should first check whether you have entered your email address and password correctly. Pay attention to upper and lower case letters.

1.2 Forgot password
However, if you have actually forgotten the password, GMX will help you on this special website. There you have to enter your email address or GMX customer number and then confirm with a captcha. However, if you have entered your password incorrectly too often, you will be blocked. But don't worry: restarting the router gives you a new IP address and thus a new chance to enter your correct password.

1.3 Check the cookie settings in the browser
Your browser should accept cookies, as disabling cookies can lead to login problems. Check this in the browser settings. In Firefox you can find this under "Settings, data protection & security" - alternatively, tap

in the address line of your Firefox. "Improved protection against activity tracking" must be set to "Standard" there, or "Cookies" must not be checked in "User-defined".
In Google Chrome you can go to the menu where you can allow cookies via "Settings, data protection & security, cookies and website data". A quicker way to get to this option is to type this into the address bar:

1.4 Use the current browser
Sometimes the login doesn't work because your browser is too old. Background: Due to the "Poodle" security gap discovered in 2014, GMX has decided not to use the vulnerable SSL 3.0 encryption protocol. However, some older browsers still use this. Solution: Just install a current browser - such as the latest Firefox or Google Chrome.

  1. Help: The GMX page does not load!

2.1 Check Allestören.de
If, on the other hand, calling up GMX only reveals an empty, extremely slow page or an error message, GMX may be overloaded and there is a malfunction on the part of GMX - this was the case on October 14, 2020, for example. Then take a look at allestören.de. This has two effects: Firstly, the successful access to this website proves that everything is obviously in order with your Internet access including your browser. Second, the statistics there reveal whether other users also have the problem. The more users indicate that they cannot log in, the more likely it is that the GMX server will fail. In this case, the only thing to do is wait and drink tea.

2.2 Call to the (expensive) GMX hotline
Alternatively, you can ask GMX how long the server problems will continue to exist. However, calling the hotline 0900 1422 533 at 3.99 euros is not a bargain (only accessible from the German landline network. Special numbers must be activated by the telephone provider). Pro and Top Mail users can call +49 721 960 58 22 and only pay their usual landline prices. Before you pick up the phone: Take a look at the GMX Twitter channel - there the mail provider also reports on malfunctions on its side.

2.3 Change browser
If other web pages do not work (correctly) either, the case may be less straightforward. In this case, try a different browser first. If that helps, is a browser setting, an add-on or an outdated browser version to blame. Deactivate all add-ons, restore the default settings and perform an update.

2.4 Restart the router, check the internet connection
If swapping browsers doesn't help, your internet line may be blocked. Restart your router, then - if the problem persists - check the router settings and contact your Internet provider. You can also test the Internet connection from another computer.

  1. GMX problems when using it in Outlook & Thunderbird
Does your GMX account cause problems in Outlook, Thunderbird or another mail client (e.g. on your smartphone), you should first try logging in and sending mail via the web frontend GMX in the browser. If this is not a problem, the settings of your mail client are not correct. Now check the POP3 data in your mail program in addition to the login data or the IMAP data. These must be:
    Inbox (POP3 / IMAP):
    • Port: 995 (for IMAP users: 993)
    • Encryption: SSL or encryption
    Outgoing mail (SMTP):
    • Mail: 587
    • Encryption: STARTTLS (TLS also works here if STARTTLS is not available)
GMX also publishes information on the GMX help pages for the configuration of IMAP, SMTP and POP3 if its mail service should be disrupted.

Mail apps
If you have problems with the pre-installed mail app on your smartphone or tablet, you can simply use the respective GMX app as an alternative. These are available for Android and iOS.
