Only Congress can cut the diesel tax
OPINION: With diesel prices hitting all-time highs, the Trump administration is reportedly considering a novel, albeit unlawful, way to circumvent the 24.4-cents-per-gallon federal diesel tax: allow the broader sale of tax-exempt, red-dyed diesel. Although suspending taxes may poll well, economic laws do not change. A diesel tax holiday will stoke demand rather than expand supply, creating unintended consequences.
Weak mortgage credit standards threaten America's housing dream
OPINION: The American dream of homeownership feels increasingly out of reach for younger Americans. A recent Morning Consult/Neighborworks America survey found that nearly 4 in 10 Gen Zers and roughly one-third of millennials believe they may never own a home. Instead of addressing the primary drivers of housing price inflation, some are seeking to juice demand by forcing many mortgages to be underwritten based on just a single credit pull.
How the government could seize your credit cards
OPINION: Milton Friedman said, “One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results.” Just as minimum wage laws intended to raise incomes for lower earners end up costing some of them their entire incomes, President Trump’s plan to cap credit card interest rates at 10% would dramatically limit access to borrowing for the 60% of borrowers without “superprime” credit. The hardest hit, however, will be those with poor credit who need credit.
Big retailers want to take your credit card rewards
OPINION: Your credit card rewards are under attack from Big Box retailers pushing Congress to pass the so-called Credit Card Competition Act. Despite being championed by Sens. Dick Durbin, Illinois Democrat, and Roger Marshall, Kansas Republican, as a competition boost in credit card processing, this Orwellian-named legislation forcing major banks to offer an alternative payment network is a cronyist giveaway to retail giants. These retailers will pocket the savings.
White House's Thanksgiving spin can't hide rising grocery costs
OPINION: The White House wants you to believe that Thanksgiving dinner will be cheaper this year. According to its press release, it’s “proof that under President Trump’s leadership, America is winning the war on high prices.” Far from it, inflation is heating up. Mr. Trump’s protectionist tariffs certainly aren’t helping. Still, that doesn’t stop White House PR from attempting some clever sleight of hand.
Tariffs are hammering America's farmers
