As a Korean American English Professor, Here Is What I Think Netflix's “The Chair” Gets Right
Amid the surge in anti-Asian violence over the past year and a half, more persistent scrutiny has emerged surrounding issues of whitewashing in Hollywood, and the lack of representation of Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) both in front of and behind the camera.
The Paradox at the Heart of the Atlanta Spa Shootings and the Rise in Anti-Asian Hate
The day after Minari, a Korean American film, garnered six Oscar nominations and Steven Yeun became the first Asian American nominee for Best Actor, Robert Aaron Long committed what Min Jin Lee called “an anti-Asian female murder spree,” killing eight people — seven of them women, six of them Asian women of Chinese and Korean descent. Lee’s words are a concise description of the shootings that occurred on March 16 in metro Atlanta.
American Periodicals: A Journal of History & Criticism
Still sparse, scholarship on Asian American newspapers in the nineteenth century has not focused on the earliest newspapers of the Anglo-Chinese press. This article examines the second Chinese-language newspaper in the United States, the Oriental; or, Tung-Ngai San-Luk, which began in 1855. I survey representative items from the newspaper's print run to offer an overview of the paper.
How to overcome post-merger integration challenges
Mergers and acquisitions hold promise for owners and investors of combinatorial synergies to reduce costs, increase profit, extend market and product coverage, as well as accelerate innovation. Globally, deal activity remained subdued during in the first half of the 2020 on the back of volatile market conditions due to Covid-19 outbreak.
Boost to Fintech in Response to Coronavirus
The Coronavirus pandemic is proving to be the boost needed for fintechs to gain traction with consumers who have been hesitant to move their finances online. With prolonged social distancing measures and lockdowns around the globe, the world is getting a crash course on why accelerated fintech adoption is necessary. History proves that crises can work to accelerate adoption of new technologies.
How Auto-Code empowers citizen developers to do more
Citizen development is a proven, powerful tool to build better applications faster. But, it has its limitations. Could there be a better solution? Let’s find out more. There’s no doubt that no-code and low-code citizen development interfaces help companies respond to digital transformation. It’s why the market for low-code development is predicted to grow to $54 billion by 2024, from a mere $6 billion in 2018.
Breaking the Fall, or How Fintechs Can Mitigate the Economic Effects of COVID-19
In the face of the worsened economic situation conditioned by the pandemic, many fintech companies now reconsider their processes. A particular focus is put towards more practical approaches in areas where the outbreak hit the most. The first two actions every reasonable business owner should take are to elaborate the current crisis management plan or — if the plan doesn’t exist — develop it from scratch, and work on the business sustainability and even disaster recovery plans.
Business resiliency- use AI to move from survive to thrive
Organisations need to focus on managing and reducing costs in a crisis, whilst simultaneously ensuring there is available scope to perform over the longer term. It is essential to have a strong focus on productivity and to create the ability to pivot to new opportunities as the economic landscape continuously changes, as we emerge out of the COVID-19 pandemic. What can we learn from companies that successfully navigated the previous economic downturn in 2008?
How COVID-19 Will Likely Affect Startups in the Future
The world is already feeling the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic in many ways, and there are various predictions about what else might come in the near future. One thing is certain though – this is not just a passing situation at this point, and it will have some very real repercussions for everyone. Startups in particular seem to be getting affected a lot by what’s happening already, and there seems to be a lot more coming up on the horizon as well.
How banks are still missing out on the SME market opportunity
The SME segment is the backbone of the economy. According to the Federation of Small Businesses there were 5.8 million small businesses at the start of 2019 and SMEs accounted for 99.9 per cent of the business population. A recent COVID-19 survey of UK SMEs conducted by McKinsey (2020), shows more than half view the country’s economy as very or extremely weak, and half expect market stagnation or recession. A staggering 80 percent of SMEs say their revenues are declining. And it’s not only the UK.
Survive and Accelerate: Marketplace lenders’ varied paths to the next growth stage post-Coronavirus
Rising unemployment, small business failures, and impending recession pose an existential threat to marketplace lenders who take risks to accurately identify creditworthy borrowers underserved by traditional financial institutions. Within weeks of lockdowns that swept across the globe in March, LendingClub laid off 30% of its staff, Kabbage stopped small business loans, and more than sixteen lending platforms across Asia-Pacific laid off staff and took dramatic measures to cut costs.
Unmasked: Anti-Asian Violence amid the COVID-19 Pandemic
Introduction by series curator Melissa Borja, assistant professor in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan. At first glance, the novel coronavirus appears to choose its victims mercilessly and without discrimination. As of June 24th, the 9.1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 473,000 deaths have touched all continents except Antarctica.
Orientalism in the Age of COVID-19
MARCH 24, 2020 When coronavirus became a thing, I remember thinking first, narcissistically, Oh, f**k, here come the racist taunts and slurs. My hindsight was not, in this case, 20/20. I did not expect the “Yellow Peril” level of psycho-cultural turmoil and the perpetual feeling of being dispossessed of my body. As an Asian-American woman, my sense of being seen and judged as an infected individual has never been as amplified as it is today, both in person and online.

More PPI pain for UK high street banks
In 2017, it was reported that the payment protection insurance (PPI) scandal had cost some of Britain’s largest high street banks more than £34bn. Yet our analysis of over 1.25 complaints shows that the last kicks of PPI are still to come. With the PPI complaints deadline looming on August 29th 2019, our data shows that many banks are experiencing a flood of new claims. If they fail to address this, they will be hit with fresh fines from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Distressed Loan Settlement: New Thinking and Technology for Inventory Management and Upstream Review
Mike Kerrigan, partner, Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, and manager, Magis Analytics LLC, is coauthor of this article. In an earlier post, I mentioned three rules for driving change in the loan market: Rule #1: What can be standardized must be standardized. Rule #2: What has been standardized must be automated. Rule #3: Go back to Rule #1, and then to Rule #2. Then, I explained how those rules can be applied to “demystify” the LSTA Purchase and Sale Agreement for Distressed Trades (PSA).
Even Dust Particles Can Be Smart With IIoT! Know the Mileage of Industrial IoT with Real examples.
We all are aware of the concept of turning on and off the lights with the mobile phone. For manufacturers, it is possible to achieve it with the help of IoT (Internet of thing). IoT is a very simple concept. IoT enables physical objects to connect with the internet and thanks to the connectivity to the internet, it distributes several digital ways to operate those physical products. Currently, IoT is being applied to security and health-related devices.
Riding the Korea FinTech Wave
In stark comparison to how technologically advanced South Korea is (say for instance, introducing the world’s first 5G internet for smartphones) and being recognized as the most innovative country in the world according to Bloomberg’s annual Innovation Index, the Korean financial system is astoundingly outdated because of bank incumbents that are fixed in old ways and conservative government regulations that have prevented progression. This is all about to change.
Get Humble. Get Digital. Get Growth.
Banks’ attempts to “digitize what they have” isn’t going to work. They need to massively reduce the scope and complexity of what they are involved in first. Then digitize. Then grow. Banks are like Cruise Ships Traditional banks have a lot in common with large cruise ships. They have lots of passengers who have to date been largely happy to stay on board and enjoy the comfort and extensive facilities available on the cruise ship (swimming pools, casinos, cabaret acts).
How to choose a regulator for a financial company
London was home to many European fintech companies - currently almost 50% of all payment institutions of the European Economic Area (EEA) are clustered in the UK. However, Brexit means that they will face the risk of losing authorization to provide financial services within the European Union (EU), e.g., lose the opportunity to serve clients from the all over the EU.
Crypto infographic with all of the basic information you need
I recently stumbled upon a very interesting infographic that I think captures the current state of the cryptocurrency world very well. The infographic was published by Forexnewsnow and captures some of the important statistics about the world of cryptocurrency today. Cryptocurrency regulation map The first map on the infographic is the cryptocurrency regulation map, which is a rather simple, but important aspect of the crypto industry that people should be considering.
Local expert opinions on how effective ESMA regulations are
In our previous discussion about ESMA, we were praising the regulatory move by the EU for its potential to protect retail clients from irks. But, after taking a close look at the effect that the regulation was having on the operation of brokes, we became slightly skeptical. We realized that there were some issues with the regulation that we were not necessarily anticipating or aware of.
The rise and fall of P2P lending in China
When contemplating FinTech in China, Alibaba and Tencent – among the world’s largest FinTech disruptors – will most likely be at the forefront of discussions. With market capitalizations of around half a trillion US$, the two tech giants account for over 90% of mobile transactions in China (through Alipay and WeChat Pay). However, mobile payments constitute just one aspect of China’s booming FinTech industry.
Confirmation of Payee is set to protect people from Authorised Push Payment scams, are you ready?
Losses totalling £354m arising from Authorised Push Payment (APP) scams were recorded in 2018. This staggering number of losses represents a total of 83,864 victims, the majority of which were on personal accounts. To help reduce cases of APP scams and to minimise the impact the crime can have on consumers, a Voluntary Code and a Confirmation of Payee scheme are being introduced in the UK. Scams are a huge problem and these statistics are more than just numbers.
Compliance: should smaller firms ask the question, 'why bother?'
In the wake of another whopping FCA fine of £34.3m to Goldman Sachs last week, following the £27.6m UBS fine, are the bigger players ignoring the regulations? MiFID and MiFID II introduced more regulatory overheads to firms in the UK, as well as the rest of Europe. Major projects have been set up and delivered on with overall costs amounting to billions - and some firms have been lost along the way, unable to make ends meet as a result.
Importance of Conducting Independent Assessment For An Enterprise Risk Management Function
The saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” However, in the culture of today’s business market, the saying should be adapted to say, “If the existing risk management program is working, still see if there are areas for improvement with an independent assessment.” The reason is that enterprise risk management (ERM) programs are structured plans designed to be consistently organized and responsive to the risks facing an organization.
Case Report: Refractory Calciphylaxis in Lupus
Calciphylaxis is a poorly understood and life-threatening ischemic vasculopathy characterized by calcification of the small- and medium-size arteries in the skin, subcutaneous tissue and internal organs, which leads to thrombosis, tissue necrosis and painful skin ulcerations that won’t heal. The disease has a 50–80% mortality rate. Although affected patients typically have end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and associated hyperparathyroidism, it can (rarely) occur in non-uremic patients.
Boron “stitching” reaction: a powerful tool for the synthesis of polyethylene-based star architectures
The linking of macroanions with BF OEt leads to a 3-arm star with a boron junction point, which can serve as a macroinitiator for the polyhomologation of dimethylsulfoxonium methylide, thus enabling the synthesis of novel but not “stable” polyethylene (PE)-based 3-arm star block copolymers. Taking advantage of the “stitching” reaction, which transforms the “unstable” boron junction to “stable” carbon, we were able to synthesize novel star block copolymers.
Gear & Location Rentals for Live Streamed Shows
Knowing from experience from our last three runs in August 2011-2014... August streamathons require a lot of planning on my part, I've learned that it is never too early to prepare for August. During this time I sink all my energy to creating and capturing performances and pushing the boundaries of live streaming as an art medium. I spend months prior to August coming up with unique innovative show concepts/ideas/locations and I invest in better equipment.
