Could NATO cope without the United States?
As NATO leaders prepare to meet in Madrid for a summit that will set a course for the next decade and beyond, the world’s most significant military alliance is facing its most fraught period since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has brought war to NATO’s borders, while the brief flicker of consensus on sending lethal aid to Kyiv has been brought low by French and German vacillation about whether the Russian leader should be provided with an off-ramp.
Matching strategic and defence policy to the climate challenge
Australia is experiencing a series of cascading crises. While the most immediate is the Covid-19 pandemic, the global and regional strategic order in which it has so comfortably lived for decades is currently undergoing a significant shift. These compounding crises have challenged policy frameworks and response capacity. But the largest and most consequential crisis that Australia faces is climate change. In magnitude and consequence, climate change is potentially much more significant.
Biden-Putin summit: Managing expectations
The United States and Russia are both carefully managing down expectations of any dramatic breakthroughs when US President Joe Biden meets his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Geneva on 16 June – their first face-to-face contact since Biden took office. This is understandable and sensible. Yet it in no way diminishes the value and importance of their gathering. Announcing the summit, the White House said the aim was to “restore predictability and stability to the US–Russia relationship”.
Ukraine’s four-cornered contest draws to a close

Vladimir Putin’s decade-long campaign against the newer members of NATO and the European Union, and the former Soviet republics to Russia’s west, has brought territorial gains, huge domestic rewards and manageable external stresses.
Putin and Trump: anatomy of a bromance
In a history studded with confrontations, Russia’s relations with the West, and with the United States in particular, have reached a unique stand-off. Perhaps for the first time ever, the Kremlin leadership has helped install its preferred candidate in the White House — and not just any candidate, but one who seems to love Russia, and in some sense seems under the Russian president’s thumb.
Putin’s Trump-Supported Hybrid War on the West | RealClearWorld
It needs to be understood that Russia views the EU and the West generally as an enemy. To say this is not Russophobia. It has been made clear in countless official Russian documents, to say nothing of their routine pronouncements, propaganda and actions. Nor is it something new.

Alcohol abuse rampant at war front
Several months ago, three Ukrainian soldiers from a military unit stationed in Kharkiv Oblast allegedly murdered a fellow soldier and tortured and kidnapped seven others. They were drunk at the time, according to the regional military prosecutor, who said the suspects face life in prison if convicted. While an extreme and rare case, alcohol abuse at the war front is common.
