Commentary: How Richmond's greatest asset
Ever accompanied young people to Richmond's James River Park System? Ever watched them venture into thick woods, sight wild deer, splash in bouldered shallows, sift sandbars for rocks and shells, listen for calls of kingfishers and ospreys, wander trails that are absent of any sign of civilization? The cover story of the October 2012 issue of Outside Magazine announced what we Richmonders had already known: Richmond is the nation's best river city.

Faces of the James
I met David Leroy Ross among the thick woods of 54-acre, history-laden Belle Isle—the popular island in the middle of downtown Richmond’s stretch of the James River. I learned that David, an artist by avocation and new to Richmond after retiring from an international career selling spy equipment, has provided consultation to several famous actors, including Sean Penn and Robert De Niro.
In Richmond, the James River brings out the best of us
E ver chatted with buskers - those guys who do street-side drumming on overturned buckets? Their clickety rhythms confronted me last year as I approached a crowded event at the James River. I stopped and introduced myself and learned that the three of them have been together for a decade, that they busk all over town as the Buk-It-Hedz, that their percussion is freestyle and new techniques emerge daily. I photographed them for my book. Delightful fellows.

John Bryan column: On National Grandparents Day, thoughts of Angelina, autism and a chance to chime in JC walks with her granddaughter Angelina at PARK365 in Richmond. JOHN BRYAN By John Bryan “Time for school,” Angelina announces, holding a Peppa Pig figure. I hold Peppa’s brother, George, and reply, “OK, Peppa. I’m coming.” My 5-year-old granddaughter cajoles my play participation as I attempt to write this piece about National Grandparents Day and the important national survey that I’ll take.

John Bryan column: The fight of the century
John Bryan column: The fight of the century 1 of 3 Ticket stubs serve as souvenirs for unforgettable boxing matches. By John Bryan He made unprecedented use of the media and public spotlight to energize his supporters, engage the masses and attract a record turnout. His narcissistic arrogance complemented an infectious charisma that he exuded among cheering crowds at every appearance and rally.
John Bryan column: Celebrating our fathers' best qualities
“Our Pearl Harbor” is how U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams described the arrival of COVID-19. Seventy-five years ago, my father, Tom, spent Father’s Day on Okinawa in Japan doctoring sick and wounded soldiers of World War II’s last great battle (as described by my cousin, Charles F.
John Bryan: We've let plenty of sunshine in since the dawning of Aquarius
Something dawned on me recently when I heard my radio’s oldies station sing, “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.” The Fifth Dimension released that song in the year I left my teens, the year of the dawning of my adulthood: 1969.
John Bryan: Postcards bring happiness to at least two people
My brother-in-law’s postcard book has just been published, and it’s worthy of consideration. More in a minute. When is the last time you sent someone a postcard? Or received one? An old fashioned, personal, hand-written, postcard — not a card that announces or promotes something. These days most of the mail that we receive through the U.S. Postal Service consists of perfunctory communications at best, time-wasting junk at most, and mistake-ridden notifications and bills at worst.
John Bryan: How some of Trump's advice can advance the arts
I recently read President Donald J. Trump’s book, “The Art of the Deal,” which, written 30 years ago, remains the runaway best seller among his 15 books.
John Bryan: A basket case for NICU families in RVA - and beyond - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Guest-columnists
A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a hospital facility that treats babies — usually premature — who need 24/7 focused medical attention. My granddaughter, Angelina, weighed a pound and a half when she was born 15 weeks early last March. Nobody plans or expects or wants to be a NICU parent. NICU parents are necessarily and suddenly confronted with terrifying medical challenges. And they are also confronted with something else.
Guest column: Why public art is worth the price - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Guest-columnists
Here’s something that I often say: Give a man a sandwich and it will sustain him for a couple of days. But put a song in his heart and it will be with him forever. And as a community teacher, a university faculty member, an overseas artist ambassador, and much more, JC is one of those special folks who has spent a lot of years on the front line.
Bryan: On Richmond's excellent nonprofits - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Guest-columnists
I assumed that their selections would be clustered around perhaps a dozen or so of our region’s long-established, well-recognized, cornerstone nonprofits. What astonished me was that they named 92 different nonprofits to which I distributed their attendance fees, totaling more than $8,000. Each one of these 92 nonprofits must be stellar indeed, confirmed by it being somebody’s very favorite. What’s your favorite nonprofit organization in the Richmond region? What are some of the reasons why?
John Bryan: Helping RVA's nonprofits - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Guest-columnists
I have of course received lots of letters — some with straightforward requests to support specific programs, and others that used attention-getting gimmicks, including one that had a real nickel glued inside the address window. And I have received telephone solicitations, including some from friends asking me to support their favorite organizations and others from obscure area codes, almost all of which I declined to answer.
RVA nonprofits should pursue major gifts - Richmond.com: Charles-f-bryan-jr
Richmond has an increasingly vibrant arts and culture scene, thanks in large part to the many nonprofit arts and culture organizations that range from pillar organizations — such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Richmond Symphony — to smaller organizations like Art 180, which uses art to help turn young lives around, and One Voice Chorus, which uses song to celebrate and strengthen racial relationships.
