Have Everton done enough in the transfer market to kick on?
Everton's owners justified the club's lack of transfer business in January by insisting the club were keeping their 'powder dry' for the summer. With the summer window having now closed, there's an argument that the squad that finished 13th last season has not been improved sufficiently. Everton began last season with an aim to remain above danger, but as the season progressed began to look towards Europe.
Tracing carbonaceous aerosols through trace gas–aerosol relationships in urban pollution plumes
|
Abstract Understanding the composition of carbonaceous aerosols, black carbon (BC) and organic aerosols (OA), remains a major challenge in atmospheric science. Using data from two aircraft campaigns with identical instrumentation over Europe and East Asia, we analyze statistical relationships between concentrations of five trace gases (CO, NO2, HCHO, O3, and SO2) with BC and OA in order to estimate carbonaceous aerosol in urban pollution plumes.

Worried about data centers? Here’s what you can do
In recent weeks, WOC has been fielding a lot of questions about data center development in Wyoming. Some of the questions we’ve received have clear answers, while others are less understood and require careful analysis of individual projects and permitting processes. Given the number of proposals and developments that are being discussed, we wanted to share a few commonly asked questions and invite you to reach out to us with questions.
Legislative Lowdown: How did conservation fare at the 2025 Wyoming Legislature? — Wyoming Outdoor Council
Just like that, the 2025 Wyoming Legislature has come to a close. Over eight frenzied weeks, lawmakers debated hundreds of bills. Some made it into law, while the vast majority met their end. Now that the dust has settled, how did it all shake out for Wyoming’s lands, waters, wildlife, climate, and communities? More than anything, this session was defined by the bills that never made it to the governor’s desk. Of the 22 priority bills that WOC engaged on, only four were signed into law.
Legislative Lowdown: Rooftop solar bill now includes a poison pill — Wyoming Outdoor Council
It’s crunch time at the Capitol as we enter the final two weeks of the 2025 Wyoming state legislative session. Some bills are making their way to the governor’s desk for signature, while others will fall by the wayside if they miss key deadlines this Thursday and Friday. As these deadlines approach, we’re watching closely and will be ready to spring into action to support conservation priorities and fight back against threats. Read on to find out where things stand and how you can help.
Legislative Lowdown: Updates on rooftop solar, mining operations, and more — Wyoming Outdoor Council
This post was originally published on January 24, 2025. It’s been an eventful second week at the Capitol — and although this session feels slightly slower-paced than previous years, the need for citizen action is as urgent as ever. Now and in the coming week, we need your voice to protect our shared interests in Cheyenne! Read on for key updates and ways you can help.
Why we're concerned about nuclear waste storage in Wyoming: A deeper dive — Wyoming Outdoor Council
When the 2025 General Session kicks off next week, the debate over nuclear waste storage is set to become a hot (dare we say radioactive?) topic. In preparation, we wanted to share the latest information about the current proposal to store the country’s nuclear waste in Wyoming — and why we plan to oppose it. Wyoming has stood firm against nuclear waste storage for decades, and for many good reasons.
INVITING NUCLEAR WASTE RISKS FEDERAL OVERREACH AND ENVIRONMENTAL HARM — Wyoming Outdoor Council
Some bad ideas refuse to die — and the recent legislative push to make Wyoming a temporary location for the nation’s high-level radioactive waste is definitely one of them. Over the last three decades, the Wyoming Legislature has discussed rolling out the red carpet for nuclear waste several times. Now, that discussion promises to rear its head once again when the 2025 General Session begins in January.
THE WESTERN SOLAR PLAN IS FINALIZED. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR WYOMING? — Wyoming Outdoor Council
Where we site large-scale solar matters — and with the final draft of the Bureau of Land Management’s Western Solar Plan, we now have a useful template for proactively deciding where solar projects should (and should not!) be built on federal lands. Back in April, we asked our supporters to engage in the public comment process for the updated Western Solar Plan, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to get solar siting right.
What Would it Take for Tulane to be Ranked After Week One?
Tulane football's 52-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana was as dominant as Tulane fans could have hoped for in terms of the AP Poll. So what has to happen the rest of the weekend for Tulane to be ranked? I’ve done the work so that you don’t have to. Here’s the recipe. Based on the voting heading into the season, Tulane would be ranked 38th in the country if the AP Poll went that far. Before discussing the 12 unranked opponents Tulane is currently behind, let’s start with the ranked matchups.
Tulane Quarterback Darian Mensah Flashes Elite Traits in Debut
Tulane dismantled Southeastern Louisiana in their opening game, beating the Lions by a score of 52-0 in a game that was never really close. Tulane redshirt freshman quarterback starred in his debut, completing 10/12 of his passes for 205 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. While fans should expect this kind of statistical performance from their quarterback against an FCS school, Mensah’s process should leave Tulane fans excited.
What Does Tulane Receiver Mario Williams Need to Do to Capitalize on His Talent?
Tulane offensive coordinator Joe Craddock tells Tulane fans what the key to utilizing Mario Williams this season will be. In this story: Mario Williams is one of the most explosive receivers in college football, and he’s certainly shown that since arriving at Tulane University. A quarterback’s best friend is somebody like Mario, who can take a check down and turn it into a touchdown on any given play.
How Can Tulane’s Wide Receivers Make Life Easier on a New Quarterback?
With one of the best supporting casts in college football, how can Tulane’s quarterback succeed in 2024? In this story: Between Mario Williams, Shazz Preston, and Yulkeith Brown, Tulane likely has the best group of receivers out of all Group of Five programs, and possibly the best group in program history. Similarly, Tulane running back Makhi Hughes is also one of the most talented players in the nation.
Could Michael Pratt's Mentee Be the Answer at Quarterback for Tulane Football?
While most Tulane fans believed the quarterback competition would ultimately come down to Ty Thompson and Kai Horton, Darian Mensah is making waves. Interestingly, Mensah was not highly recruited in high school, as Tulane was his sole FBS offer. You must credit the Tulane staff for identifying the talented prospect when other schools somehow overlooked Mensah.
Does UAB Have What it Takes to Upset Tulane Football This Season?
Tulane Football takes on a familiar foe on October 5th in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers, a team Tulane bested in their most recent matchup in 2023 by a score of 35-23. UAB has won double-digit games only once in their Division One history, in 2018, and has not had a winning record since 2021. Could they be a sleeper team to beat Tulane this season? Likely not, but you never know. That’s why they play the games.
How can Tulane Guarantee a Win Against South Florida?
Tulane kicks off conference play this season hosting USF in Week 5, an opponent against which they have historically fared well. USF will likely be 2-2 at best heading into this matchup, with projected losses against Alabama in Week 2 and Miami in Week 4. The Bulls have one of the most experienced offenses in the country. The only two starters on their offense who will not be seniors are their left guard and starting quarterback, Byrum Brown.
How Will Tulane Fare Against the Ragin’ Cajuns This Season?
Tulane takes on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns this season in week four. What does their roster look like, and what should you expect from the Wave against this team? In this story: Tulane will take on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Sept. 21st, the Wave’s last matchup before beginning conference play. Now Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier led Louisiana to three consecutive ten-win seasons between 2019 and 2021, but the Ragin' Cajuns have only won six games each season since then.
What is Tulane’s Formula for Success This Season?
Throughout Tulane's offseason, fans have pointed to the quarterback competition as the primary cause for concern or optimism this season. However, the competition may not be as crucial to Tulane’s success as fans believe. While Michael Pratt’s accomplishments at Tulane should not be understated, the team had the most success when they possessed a run-first option. In 2022, the season Tulane won the Cotton Bowl, the offense ran through Tyjae Spears.
How Does Tulane Compare to Kansas State in Their Upcoming Clash?
For many Tulane fans, the season's biggest game is Week 2 when the Green Wave hosts the Wildcats. It will be one of two matchups against Power Five programs currently scheduled for Tulane next season, the other being when they travel to Norman Stadium in Week 3 to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. So, what are the Wildcats' strengths? Offensively, it starts with the run game. DJ Giddens returns for them this season after putting up over a thousand yards and double-digit touchdowns last season.
Oklahoma’s Brent Venables and Danny Stutsman Speak on Upcoming Tulane Matchup
The Tulane Green Wave have a tough slate in out-of-conference play with games against Kansas State and Oklahoma this season. It's the team's chance to make a statement that they're poised for a college football playoff run. SEC Media Days took place recently in Dallas, where Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was asked about the Sooners’ matchup against Tulane this season. Venables and linebacker Danny Stutsman spoke with Tulane on Sports Illustrated about the Week 2 game at Norman Stadium.
Tulane’s Head Coach Jon Sumrall Speaks on the Quarterback Competition
Tulane Head Coach Jon Sumrall was asked about the quarterback competition between Kai Horton and Oregon transfer quarterback Ty Thompson. Here’s Coach Sumrall’s complete response on Friday. “Nobody has the expectation for the other guy, for somebody to want to lose the job. I want competitive people in this program, so both of 'em want to be the starting quarterback. If they don't, then we have a really big problem.
Will the Group of Five Spot in the College Football Playoffs be Removed?
For Tulane fans, the most exciting part about the expanded college football playoffs is the spot reserved for a Group of Five school. For those unfamiliar with the new format, the expanded College Football Playoffs will not simply feature the twelve highest-ranked programs. The five highest-ranked conference champions will receive an automatic bid.
What are the Keys to Tulane Beating Oklahoma in Highly Anticipated SEC Matchup?
Every season Tulane Football seems to have one out of conference game that stands out amongst the rest as an opportunity to prove Tulane’s competitiveness on the national stage. This season that moment comes in the form of a week three matchup in Norman against the Oklahoma Sooners. At first glance, Tulane should be underdogs against the newest members of the Southeastern Conference. Oklahoma are bluebloods in the history of college football but today, that program is nowhere near what it once was.
What Makes Tulane’s 2024 Season a Success?
Expectations for Tulane football have changed significantly in just the last three seasons, after going from 2-10 in 2021 to 12-2 in 2022 and 11-3 last season. The expectation for Tulane is no longer winning six games to make a bowl appearance. But what is? Not qualifying for a bowl game would certainly be a failure of a season for Tulane. Luckily, Tulane should do much better than that. Many fans consider a college football playoff berth the bar for success.
Who are the Future Stars on Tulane's Roster?
After observing every Tulane Green Wave practice this spring, two freshmen stood out: one on offense and one on defense. Even as freshmen, these two playmakers will be difficult to keep off the field towards the end of the season. On offense, I was impressed by true freshman wide receiver Shaun Nicholas. Nicholas enrolled early at Tulane, so he should have still been in high school at the time of spring practices.
What to Expect From Tulane's Mario Williams and Shazz Preston
After Tulane's 11-3 campaign last season, the turnover at wide receiver left the most significant question mark on the roster. Freshman standout Chris Brazzell's departure left the room pretty thin, but Tulane quickly reloaded through the transfer portal and high school ranks. The two biggest additions to the receiver room came via the transfer portal in Mario Williams and Shazz Preston. Mario Williams ranked as the third receiver in the 2021 class in high school.
Tulane Sets the Blueprint for Small School Competitiveness
The Tulane Green Wave continues to adapt to a dramatically changing college football landscape. We’ve officially entered the era of NIL and the transfer portal, and whether you like it or not, there is no turning back. Fans who dislike these changes will typically point to competitiveness as the main reason they’re against the change, which is understandable.
Tulane’s Vision and Leadership Sold Coach Sumrall on the Tulane Job
New Tulane Green Wave Coach Jon Sumrall addressed the media this week at the American Conference media days in Dallas. In his opening remarks, he cited Tulane's leadership as one of the primary reasons he took the job. "I’d also like to acknowledge our administration at Tulane University, President Michael Fitz, and Athletic Director David Harris,” Sumrall said. “I would not be at Tulane without their vision and leadership. I'm honored to be the head football coach at Tulane.
Bursts of rapid diversification, dispersals out of southern Africa, and two origins of dioecy punctuate the evolution of Asparagus
Abstract The genus Asparagus arose approximately 9-15 million years ago (Ma) and transitions from hermaphroditism to dioecy (separate sexes) occurred ~3-4 Ma. Roughly 27% of extant Asparagus species are dioecious, while the remaining are bisexual with monoclinous flowers. As such, Asparagus is an ideal model taxon for studying early stages of dioecy and sex chromosome evolution in plants.
Meeting the Moment: Planning for a Responsible Energy Future with the Western Solar Plan — Wyoming Outdoor Council
If you’ve been following national energy trends, you may have noticed that 2022 was a big year. It was the first year in recent history that renewable energy surpassed coal generation in the U.S. As the cost of renewable energy continues to decline, and numerous state and federal policies continue to encourage decarbonization, it’s clear that renewable energy is here to stay. And that means states like Wyoming need to start preparing for new types of energy infrastructure on their lands.

Burrows, A young Democrat’s response
From her Twitter feed. by John Burrows No, Rep. Greene. We absolutely positively do not support you — or your BS articles against President Biden. You talk about the president lawyering up. What a joke. After January 6, you begged for a pardon from Donald Trump. You reek of desperation as Jack Smith closes in Donald Trump, and hopefully you as well.
Wise Practices: Exploring Indigenous Economic Justice and Self-Determination
Indigenous peoples are economic actors. This simple fact is undeniable, with the debate long since moving from whether we were involved in settler economies after the fur trade to what this involvement meant (Parnaby 2006, 1-2).
New federal methane rule would curb climate change, benefiT Wyoming — Wyoming Outdoor Council
by | Nov Fri, 2022 | Air, Climate Change | On Friday, Nov. 11, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency took an important step toward protecting public health and reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change by strengthening a proposed rule that will reduce wasteful methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.
Two Ways to Reduce Methane Emissions, and Why Wyoming Needs them Both — Wyoming Outdoor Council
Most policy experts agree that, along the long road to combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing wasted methane from oil and gas operations is “low-hanging fruit.” In 2020 alone, wasted methane gas from oil and gas operations made up roughly one-third of all methane emissions from human activity.
Maine Regulators Terminate Proposal for Massive Aquaculture Project
Last week Maine’s Department of Marine Resources (DMR) denied an application by American Aquafarms to build a 30-pen, 120-acre salmon production facility in Frenchman Bay. John Burrows, ASF’s Executive Director of U.S. Operations, answers some questions about the project and why it was terminated. Aquaculture escapees from a cage failure in the Gulf of Maine. Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the American Aquafarms project, and what made it different?
Everything in its place — Wyoming Outdoor Council
How do we make sure the coming boom in renewable energy isn’t a bust for our wildlife and public lands? This story, like much of the good work that happens in Lander, began as a meeting over coffee at the Lander Bake Shop. Staff from several conservation groups, including the Wyoming Outdoor Council, had gathered to look at GPS tracking collar data from pronghorn around Sweetwater Solar, Wyoming’s first large-scale solar project on public land.

Superchick (1973) - IMDb

Run the Red to Celebrate Wyoming Public Lands Day with Community Events in South Pass City — Wyoming Outdoor Council
Hundreds of runners from across the nation and their families, members of the public, speakers, and Tribal members will kick off the Wyoming Public Lands celebration on September 25 in South Pass City. This holiday recognizes the millions of acres of public lands in Wyoming that belong to everyone. The celebration coincides with Run the Red, where runners race across the desert, competing in half marathon, 50K, and 100K distances. Gov.
How unseen emissions continue to impair air quality in Wyoming’s Upper Green River Basin — Wyoming Outdoor Council
HOW UNSEEN EMISSIONS CONTINUE TO IMPAIR AIR QUALITY IN WYOMING’S UPPER GREEN RIVER BASIN Whether you ranch, farm, hunt, fish, or ski, there is a season for most things in Wyoming. But there are some seasons that we could do without. Topping that list is “winter ozone season” in the Upper Green River Basin of Sublette County.

A chronology of global air quality
The potential subject area is large and the focus here is on the chronology of air pollution by human activity, identifying the main issues, their causes and the regional and global trends. Other papers in this volume, to which links are made, provide the wider context, the policies developed to address the problems and the possible futures. There are four rather different sources of evidence to provide the narrative for this account.

Feelgood Bad Touch Tackle Teesside's Tuesday Blues
Rushonrock caught the first date of Bad Touch’s UK headline run and returned to catch the Shake A Leg Tour three weeks down the line… Slap bang in the middle of a thunderous three-band bill, a typically bullish Aaron Buchanan could barely hide his disappointment that so few fans had taken the opportunity to support live music on a Tuesday night on Teesside. Scratch that: he didn’t hide it at all. And why should he?

By Lewis Lapham Photo by Matthew Septimus, courtesy of Harper's Magazine. It is dangerous to excel at two different things. You run the risk of being underappreciated in one or the other; think of Michelangelo as a poet, of Michael Jordan as a baseball player. This is a trap that Lewis Lapham has largely avoided. For the past half century, he has been getting pretty much equal esteem in a pair of distinct roles: editor and essayist.
Confront the police, and lose: Letter
To add a little to Allen Holder’s letter to the editor (“Answer to shootings: Respect the law and each other,” July 16): "Attitude adjustment" is a term that often comes to mind when someone is acting obnoxious or threatening. The police are the second most qualified to make the attitude adjustment. They have the authority, the nightstick and the gun. The most qualified are the ones needing the adjustment, but they seem to forget this fact when they are confronted with authority.
Pornography is a danger to us all
The pathetic attempts in recent letters, editorials and comments to portray pornography as victimless are ignorant and imbecilic. One submission – with respect to the Utah law prohibiting titillating movies being shown where alcohol is served, and stated that the person was “ashamed to admit they even live here” – certainly fits this characterization. Pornography is definitely not victimless and pornography addiction is something that should be a concern to all rational human beings.
