Proposition 5 will help Bay Area face its biggest challenges Original
Click here for a complete list of our election recommendations. Our Bay Area is known for its beautiful landscapes, dynamic communities, economic strength and innovative spirit. But serious challenges threaten our region’s future. We must address the urgent need for affordable housing and work together to solve homelessness, protect our communities from sea level rise, and improve infrastructure for cities and counties. Proposition 5 offers a smart fundraising solution to these issues.
Bay Area counties push for comprehensive homelessness plan
Counties have worked hard for years to partner with cities, the state and community organizations to fight homelessness. We’ve developed resources and innovations to expand housing and services for unsheltered residents suffering on our streets.
Gioia: We’ve flattened the curve, but there’s more work to do
Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia speaks at the Richmond City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 22, 2019. By John Gioia, Contra Costa County supervisor Back on March 16, Contra Costa and the Bay Area were first in the nation to order a shelter-at-home. Our collective science-based efforts have slowed the spread of the virus, kept our hospitals from being overwhelmed, and saved lives. In fact, COVID-19 related hospitalizations in our county have decreased in the last two weeks from 44 to 25.
Need more prevention services, not more jail cells
Contra Costa County needs greater investment in mental health treatment, job training, affordable housing, and youth services to help keep people from becoming incarcerated, not a larger West County jail. Approving expensive new jail construction runs counter to the more fiscally responsible and humane strategy of investing greater resources in prevention and rehabilitation services. These cost-effective measures help keep people out of jail, reduce reoffending and improve public safety.
Police sex scandal needs outside invetigation
Like so many throughout the Bay Area, I am concerned by the allegations that a 19-year old Richmond woman was sexually exploited by 29 law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and San Joaquin counties. While there’s been substantial media coverage of this issue, we don’t know all the facts. We only know what we see in the media or on social media, which are often layered with opinions and rumors.
Guest commentary: Urgent need to support state measures that will preserve vital health care services for all
Economically diverse communities like Contra Costa are fortunate to have doctors, nurses and other health care providers willing to accept Medi-Cal patients -- our neighbors who do not have private health coverage. Medi-Cal providers are lifelines to our community's overall public health, preventing costly chronic illness; keeping patients from unnecessary, expensive trips to the emergency room; and saving lives when emergency care is required.
CARB rejects delay for ‘hidden gas tax’
The California Air Resources Board rejected pleas at its latest meeting to delay bringing transportation fuels into the cap-and-trade program – despite arguments that it will result in higher gas prices, cost thousands of jobs and harm the state’s poorest residents. Cap-and-trade was launched in 2012 as part of AB32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which has the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the state to 1990 levels by 2020.
