Another costly election for Arizona
Photo submitted by John Hanley John Hanley Posted Thursday, October 15, 2026 3:32 pm By John Hanley | Scottsdale OPINION — The 2026 Arizona midterm elections and the governor’s race are projected to be the most expensive ever. So far, $132 million has been raised for the governor and U.S. congressional elections. All that money brought months of non-stop political ads, mailers and negative messages. But here’s the good news: Americans are united in their concern about unlimited money in politics.

At 250, let’s renew the promise of self-government
Adobe Stock Posted Monday, May 18, 2026 2:12 pm By John Hanley | Scottsdale OPINION — As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, we have a rare opportunity not only to celebrate our founding, but to reflect on whether we are truly living up to its promise. In 1776, the concept of self-government, where power comes from the people, was revolutionary. Yet today, many Americans from all across the political spectrum feel that promise slipping away.
Whose government is it, anyway?
OPINION — January marks the 50th anniversary of Buckley v. Valeo, the Supreme Court decision that launched our current era of unregulated and unlimited money in politics. The result has been elections that are increasingly dominated by massive donors, dark money and even foreign-influenced spending, and a political system that too often is unresponsive to everyday citizens. Arizona is not immune to this problem. In 2022, Arizonans voted in favor of Prop 211, The Voters' Right to Know Act.
The Story Behind the Canvas
As a boy, I dreamed of playing professional baseball. If I wasn’t throwing a ball, I was sketching. Drawing and painting have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, a passion that only deepened as I grew older. The true spark came from two cousins whose creativity left a lasting impression: one a gifted draftsman, the other a talented woodworker.
America's impending debt death spiral
The U.S. has an annual gross domestic product of about $30 trillion and holds about $36 trillion in debt. Having zero interest rates for over a decade lulled some into thinking our debt was irrelevant as it grew. Rather than using that "free" money to invest in infrastructure and foundations for future economic growth, both political parties created gridlock over who would get credit for mitigating the nation's profound problems.

Letter: ‘Prayer’ is a Christian nationalist Trojan horse
I do not know Tom McCoy, who offered his election prayer for our country in the Sept. 14 Westerly Sun (“An election prayer offered for our country”). However, Christian Nationalists are behind many such prayers. Their Christianity has little, if anything, to do with Jesus. The movement ignores the right to religious freedom in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as it seeks to establish a “Christian” theocracy governing us.

Choosing to Embrace My Prostate Cancer
The genesis of Chemo Cookery and its foundations happened in mid-May 2018. I was diagnosed with T3a, Gleason 4+4 adenocarcinoma of the prostate (12/12) with up to 100% involvement. In layman’s terms, that’s locally advanced prostate cancer. Although it hadn’t spread to the lymph nodes or anywhere else, it had penetrated the prostate and, in short, I was sailing perilously close to metastatic stage 4. How It Began As with most prostate cancer journeys, there were no symptoms.

An Antarctic Adventure
I can answer that question. I am a U.S. Naval Academy class of 1962 graduate and ex-member of Operation Deep Freeze, which supported the U.S. Antarctic Research Project (USARP). During that time, I made two tours of approximately seven months each to Antarctica.

A key term in pricing for litigation finance (sometimes called litigation funding) is the order of priority in which litigation proceeds are paid to parties with an interest in the matter including the litigation funder. This is known as the waterfall. In our experience, it has always been the case that the financier's money is the first money out.

The Impact of the CNO’s Strategic Studies Group (SSG), 1981-1995
In 1981, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Thomas Hayward established the CNO Strategic Studies Group (SSG) to prepare potential Flag officers for three- and four-star command, stimulate strategic discourse among the Navy leadership, and enhance the reputation of the Naval War College. The institution existed until 2016; however, in 1995, CNO Admiral Jeremy M. (Mike) Boorda changed its focus from strategy to naval warfare innovation.
Brexit proved again that identity can trump economics
When more than 17 million British voters chose on June 23 to leave the European Union, it caused shock and consternation among political commentators on every major news channel — BBC, Sky, Fox, CNN. Many asked why the pollsters and markets got it wrong. Former U.S. treasury secretary and current-day pundit Larry Summers went so far in a June 24 Wonkblog post as to say that the term “political science” was an oxymoron.
