Interview

How is social media changing news?

From afar I see how social media is changing news in society. It's enabled people to sort of find their tribe with news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I don't know if I understand this one. But I love how Hemingway used his worldly real life experiences in his fiction.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Writing is hard because thinking is hard, and it's emotional and it hurts. But when stories come together it feels so good.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Hah! None. I use a Swintec typewriter/word process with a 7,000 character memory, which is about 1,200 words. It' a pain in the ass...

Why did you become a journalist?

Journalism makes me think of other people, makes me listen and observe -- a good practice for an egocentric like myself.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The story I'm most proud of writing is a long-form feature -- my first -- that is soon to be published in Esquire.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

I would say that story is all around us and in us. Observe, spark up conversations, listen, reflect, then write.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee
