7 Books by Master Storyteller John Jakes
John Jakes has been publishing stories since he was a college student in the 1950s. He got his start in the pulp magazine world, and then became an active player in the popularization of sword and sorcery. While his work was successful, Jakes' biggest break came years later in the 1970s, once he transitioned into writing historical fiction and left his advertising job.

The portrait was for him a lodestone imbued with some irresistible magnetic force. Her name was still a lodestone for the courageous and hopeful, and she still sang her siren song to young dreamers around the world.
Short Story: “Mercy at Gettysburg,” by John Jakes
Though fulfilling, consuming a dense novel can be daunting. Sometimes all you want is a snack. How about a short story? “Mercy at Gettysburg,” for instance, excerpted from The Bold Frontier, by John Jakes, goes down smooth and quick—like a warm shot of whiskey. A western, it’s set in the waning days of the Civil War. Emotional but compact, the tale is wrought with blood, lies, and family drama—all packed into just a few pages.
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk: A Novel - Kindle edition by Ben Fountain. Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.
When I first heard about this book (and Karl Marlantes' blurb), I assumed it was written by a veteran - it isn't, and that's really amazing, because this is a pitch-perfect look into a soldier's experiences.I say that as a veteran (of Desert Storm) and an embedded journalist in Iraq in 2007-09, so I have some first-hand knowledge with what he describes. To me, the voices and actions of the characters are dead-on accurate. It's got some flaws, which I'll get to first so I can finish strong.
John Jakes' Search for John D. MacDonald
Editor's note: John Jakes passed at age 90 on Saturday, March 11, 2023, in Sarasota. In the dark Ohio winter of 1976, our family fled down I-75 to Florida. We found weather much like that we’ve suffered recently. We spent Christmas at a large motel on St. Pete Beach and ate dinner while a forlorn beach boy picked up chairs he’d set out that morning. I’d wearily finished The Seekers, the third novel of my Kent family chronicles, and the darkest.
[GUEST POST] John Jakes on The Last “Brak” Story
Whatever Happened to Brak the Barbarian? Back in the day – the mid to late 1960s – I was writing Brak the Barbarian serials and short stories while I still had a day job in advertising. This took me to New York every month or so, where I had commercials to produce or supervisors to see at DFS, a genuine Madison Avenue agency – at the time the seventh largest in the world. On these trips I would usually manage a lunch with the late Lin Carter; he too was in advertising.
