John Leuzzi

Hi my name is John Leuzzi! I recently graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this past spring with a Honors Bachelor of Arts and majored in Journalism with a minor in Digital Media.

Currently I am a Big Ten/SEC trending reporter for USA Today.

I began my pursuit of working in the sports media field during my freshman year of high school at St. Joseph's Prep (PA) with their broadcasting club, WSJP. During my time in WSJP, I got some great experiences and glimpses of what the field is like.

I continued this pursuit at Marquette with my involvement at the Marquette Wire, Marquette's Student Media Organization. In my four years at the Marquette Wire, I have held numerous roles — Sports Reporter, Assistant Sports Editor, Sports Audio Producer and Executive Sports Editor — as I grew and learned to be the journalist I am today.

Over the course of my final two years at Marquette and the Wire, I served as the Executive Sports Editor and the head men's basketball beat reporter. In June of 2022, I was named the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s 2022 Collegiate Journalist of the Year.

Outside of my duties with the Wire during my senior year, I was one of nine student interns with the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism, which is part of the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette. In this internship, I worked with former Wall Street Journal reporter Lee Hawkins for an academic year on a long-form podcast project called “What Happened in Alabama?”. The podcast is set to be published in the Spring of 2024.

Post graduation from Marquette, I took part in a 12-week postgraduate internship with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's sports department. In this role, I provided coverage across a plethora of beats including the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. Additionally, I freelanced for The Philadelphia Inquirer in August of this year to cover the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Other internships that I have had include two summers serving as the Director of Broadcast and Media Relationships for the Mystic Schooners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, Content Department Intern for The Basketball Tournament and a staff intern for Phillies Nation, an online website that covers the Philadelphia Phillies.
