Greyhound 'Turnaround Season' Comes to an End
On Friday night, beneath the shimmer of a cold daylight-saving half-moon, the Healdsburg Greyhounds varsity football team ended their season playing against the No. 1 and undefeated Sonoma Valley Dragons. The score at the end of the night was 35-7, which may seem lopsided, but in fact the Hounds held the mighty Dragons to one of their lowest scores of the season.
'Frenzied' Football Game Goes Into Overtime
In what proved to be the most exciting and suspenseful game of the season so far, the Healdsburg Greyhounds lost to the Peregrine Falcons of Archie Williams High in overtime on Saturday afternoon in San Anselmo, 43-42. In the day game, beneath a partly cloudy sky, the evenly matched teams played vigorously and aggressively to the last second of the three-hour contest, when the Falcons claimed victory.
Seniors Play Their Final Volleyball Match
This year’s girls Greyhounds Varsity Volleyball team finished with a 7-20 record overall, fifth in their league at 3-7. But that never stopped the team from coming out and playing with a vibrancy that only high school girls volleyball can exhibit. Melissa Casas Gatica, co-captain with middle blocker Allie Espinoza, was heralded this season for her spirited play at libero.
Frustrated Hounds Come Up Short to Terra Linda
By John Linker Last Friday night, in front of an excited and anxious home crowd, the Healdsburg Varsity Football team lost to the Terra Linda Trojans, unable to put an end to their three-game losing streak. The Hounds, who are now 3-5 overall, played an emotional game, especially in the second half, but their 28-19 loss to Terra Linda gives them a 0-4 record in league play. The Greyhounds played well, especially at the start of the first half.
Racing Among the Vines
By John Linker With a break in the heat and even a slight breeze, an exciting cross country race took place last Wednesday at Hoot Owl Vineyards in Alexander Valley. The bucolic vine- and tree-studded setting is undermined by the rugged course, full of steep inclines, sharp turns and some unstable footing. This course challenged both the running Hounds of Healdsburg and their competitors, the Piner Prospectors.
Homecoming Parade: A Slice of Americana
By John Linker Every high school has a Homecoming, but not every high school holds a Homecoming Parade. Last Friday afternoon, Healdsburg carried on its yearly tradition of holding one such parade. Four floats, one per class at the high school, were escorted by Healdsburg police as they meandered through the town’s neighborhoods—starting at the high school, making a couple of rounds around the Plaza and ending at Rec Park, where students stood by for halftime activities.
Hounds Lose Close Game in Season Opener
By John Linker In front of a Homecoming crowd gathered for the Healdsburg Greyhounds’ first official league football game of the 2024-25 season, the varsity team fell 13-18 to the San Rafael Bulldogs last Friday night at Rec Park. The Hounds are coming off a series of exciting non-division games that saw them break their three-year losing streak with three wins and two school records for senior quarterback Nova Perrill II.
Greyhounds Fall to Visiting Vikings
By John Linker One could feel autumn’s cool beginnings last Friday night at Rec Park’s Art McCaffrey Field. Before a sold-out audience, packed student section and the even beats of the Greyhound Band, the explosive Montgomery Knights toppled the Hounds, dropping Healdsburg’s perfect run of 3-0 to 3-1. This one hurt. It could have been mistakes made, balls fumbled or penalties called, but in the end, the Vikings proved their strength and quickness throughout the rugged game.
Hounds Combine Offense, Defense to Leash Eagles
By John Linker The Healdsburg Greyhounds varsity football team won their third straight game of the year on Saturday afternoon in Contra Costa County, walloping the Christian Berean Eagles by a score of 40-26. In the rare midday weekend game on the Walnut Creek campus, the Hounds entered the game with momentum and a purpose. Last year the two teams tied, so both went into this year’s game to settle the score.
Running with the Greyhounds at Viking Opener
By John Linker Early Saturday morning at Spring Lake Regional Park In Santa Rosa, 23 schools from all over the North Bay descended into the misty valley of the Trione-Annadel hills to run the 37th annual Viking Invitational. The challenging two-mile course starts with a long uphill climb leading into the mostly dirt trails of the Spring Lake Park next to the lake.
Hungry Hounds Feast on St. Helena, 54-25
By John Linker After last week’s first win in three years, a mix of nerves, anxiety and hope filled the Rec Park grandstand to capacity. The anticipation was palpable. The crowd outside the snack bar was more of a tangle of humanity than a line, the student section emitted a low tremulous roar and the Greyhounds were drinking pre-game Gatorade like they were filming a commercial.
The Joy of Running for HHS
By John Linker High energy comes in with the Healdsburg Greyhounds Cross Country team this year. With the surprise addition of 10 freshmen runners, the Hounds hope to boost their chances to make league champs. And although that might depend on the good health of their veteran runners, one can’t deny the fresh energy these freshmen bring to the team. Friday afternoon, Aug.
Greyhounds End Long Winless Drought
By John Linker It had been three years, or as the whisper throughout the crowd put it more exactly, 1,072 days, since the Healdsburg Hounds Varsity football team had won a game. But last Friday night, in front of a jam-packed home crowd, the Hounds ended that losing streak with a 35-21 win over the neighboring Cloverdale Eagles.
