Episode 160: Questioning Your Assumptions About The Bible
The Bible is filled with oddities and hard things to understand. Oftentimes, the Bible itself can be a stumbling block to belief in God and the Christian faith, and many former Christians report leaving the faith because of problems they see in the Bible. Our guest today is John Marriott (Ph.D.) and he has co-authored Is It Really the Good Book?, a book that aims to help people understand and appreciate the Bible as the Word of God and as a wise guide for life.

AfterDark: Through Ancient Eyes: Cultural Insights to Transform Familiar Scriptures
If we pay close attention to the cultural factors embedded in the Bible, we can see old stories come alive in new ways. In the story of the woman with the issue of blood in Luke 8, there are gender, economic, social, and personal factors at play that we as western moderns miss. Knowing what to look for as we read the Bible can help us appreciate old stories in ways that surprise us and cause us to fall in love with Jesus more. John is a faculty affiliate with the Harvard Human Flourishing Program.
Time to go low if we want democracy to survive
“When they go low, we go high” Michelle Obama told the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Well, a fat lot of good that did the Democrats back then and in 2024 as well.
How will the Jasper wildfire affect wildlife?
The first grizzly bear cubs I ever photographed were in Jasper National Park, Alta. So was the first wolf. And as we all watch the devastation wrought on the townsite, the people and the park over the past few days, I can’t help but wonder how the much-loved bears and wolves are doing as the wildfire continues to devour their habitat. Apparently, I’m not alone in thinking about the wildlife of the park.
Wolf behaviour analysis: an excerpt from The Pipestone Wolves
Excerpted from Günther Bloch & John E. Marriott’s The Pipestone Wolves: The Rise and Fall of a Wolf Family (RMB, 2024). Seventy-four per cent of the 140 encounters between a wolf and a human (with and without a dog) were observed with a distance of over 100 metres (but not more than 150 metres) between the subjects, whereas only 26 per cent were under 100 metres.
The problem the Tory “National Service” idea is trying to solve
Most people who read this site are well used to being sickened to their stomachs by not just Conservative policy ideas but what they have done in practice. In the past few months alone, we’ve seen them pick on disabled people, sick people, vulnerable people seeking safety in this country, people coming to this country to share their skills in the workplace and pay taxes, trans people and anyone over 50 who isn’t working full time.
The Pipestone Wolves: The Rise and Fall of a Wolf Family
Now available in paperback, this compelling book is full of behavioural insights and wolf tales that will engage those interested in the state of wild wolves throughout North America. In the winter of 2008–09, a new wolf family from the Pipestone Valley suddenly appeared in the Bow Valley of Banff National Park, taking up residence alongside a family that had ruled there for over a decade.
Porn in the digital woods: a driver of children abusing children?
At the University of East London there has been a research focus on child protection for many years. The university hosts the Policing Innovation, Enterprise and Learning Centre (PIEL), an international research centre. The recent report by The Guardian, based on data released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), brings to light a concerning trend: the data suggests that the majority of child sexual abuse offences are committed by other young people.

Wildlife photographer spends five years following a wild wolf pack in Canada’s Kootenay National Park
By 8:30 a.m., I had wolves moving all around in front of me. Pups frolicking in the tall grasses to my left and adults sauntering through the trees at the back of the ridge directly ahead of me. I was both thankful and exhilarated to see so many wolves and to see them all looking so healthy, with resplendent, shimmering summer coats and fat, full bellies. The pups were constantly playing and chasing each other, which was another sign that the spring had been very good to the family.

Guest Post - Deconversion: The All-Or-Nothing Fallacy
It seems that not a month goes by without a well-known Christian announcing on social media that they have left the faith. More troubling, but less sensational is that for each celebrity deconversion there are hundreds of unknown believers who deconvert that don’t get the headlines. Deconversion from Christianity is a growing and troubling trend. And one that the church and Christian academe cannot ignore.
What Bears Teach Us
From the first moment bear biologist Sarah Elmeligi came eye to eye with a grizzly bear, her life changed. In a moment that lasted mere seconds, she began to question everything she thought she knew about bears. How could this docile creature be the same one with a fearsome reputation for vicious attacks? Through years of research, Elmeligi grew to appreciate that bears are so much more than data points, stunning photos, and sensational online stories.

Behind the covers: My journey as a published wildlife photographer
When I was 26, I said goodbye to a nine-to-five job with Parks Canada in Banff National Park and began to slowly transition into a career in photography. That fall, a phone call came out of the blue from the photo editor of Canadian Geographic magazine. I had been busy taking photographs for two and a half years, but I still hadn’t considered trying to sell my images, let alone to Canada’s most well-known nature magazine. I was a deer-in-the-headlights rookie navigating uncharted waters.
Behind the covers: My journey as a published wildlife photographer
My first Can Geo cover shot: a bull elk resting in snow in Banff National Park. (Photo: John E. Marriott) By the year 2000, I had made a full transition to wildlife photography and was a full-time pro. Over the years, I had a number of images appear in the pages of Canadian Geographic, but that next cover image continued to elude me. Then, in 2009, it finally happened. Another Canadian Geographic cover.

Wild Side - Species Profile: Moose (preview)
In this issue we’re launching a new feature in The Wild Side looking at some of Canada’s most iconic, as well as a few lesser known, species from a wildlife photography perspective. The goal is to provide you with great value in terms of knowing when, where and how to get spectacular photographs of everything ranging from large mammals to marmots, and even the tiny pika, a small, tailless mammal that resembles a rabbit.
The Johnstone Strait (preview) - Outdoor Photography Canada
The first time I saw a sea otter in the wild, it was like a jolt of electricity had knifed through my body. I was off the north coast of Vancouver Island, at the top end of Johnstone Strait, and the sighting was brief — as in, “Oh my gosh, is that a sea otter?” By the time I’d said the words, it was gone, yet that two seconds stuck with me and I’ve been addicted to sea otters ever since.
John Marriott: How should we pay for local services?
For many years now governments of all political colours have seen fit to centralise more and more powers to themselves. The result of this has impacted directly on the councils that in the past were the major providers of the kind of services that have improved the lives for generations of our citizens. Today they are a shadow of their former selves, whose lack of influence is clearly reflected in poor turnouts in local elections.
Wild Side - Photographing Wild Canids in Winter (full story)
Regardless of where you live in Canada, winter opens up a new world of wildlife to most of us photographers — both in terms of the weather we have to deal with and the ways in which we can find our subjects. Many of the hardest yet most gratifying animals to photograph throughout the year come from the canid family: foxes, coyotes and wolves. And fortunately for us, winter makes finding and photographing each of them a little easier than it is at any other time of year.
John Marriott: If we are to 'go it alone' we must tackle our skills crisis
If we are really going to make our way in the world when we leave the European Union our new government, amongst the many things on its plate at the moment, has got to address the skills shortage that we have so far failed to correct and which we will ignore at our peril. This is one of the reasons why we have needed to accept levels of immigration which played a crucial role in the decision made in the 2016 referendum.

Wild Side - Doing Your Background Checks (preview)
During a recent critique session at one of my workshops in Jasper National Park, I realized there’s one key compositional misstep that continuously slides under the radar in wildlife photography, whether people are photographing bears, beavers or bald eagles. Most photographers, young or old, male or female, tend to start their photo careers with every subject dead centre in the image.
