Debug Your Node.js App in 60 Seconds
Setting up debugging can be a chore. It can make you feel like console.log isn’t so bad after all. Right? While I enjoy a good console.log as much as anyone, I’d much rather debug with zero configuration of my app. Wouldn't you? Sketchnote of Debugging Node.js in 60 Seconds Visual Studio Code (aka VS Code) has changed the game on Node.js debugging. There is a feature called Node: Auto Attach (you can learn more about it here in the docs). Or keep reading — this will only take a minute.
Hide Your Secrets in VS Code
Have you ever wanted to hide your secrets in environment files? Cloak for VS Code helps you avoid accidentally sharing them with everyone who sees your screen. Alpha Release I just released Cloak v0.0.2 over the weekend! What Can it Do? Great question! You can check out the full documentation here. But here is a quick glimpse of the main features.
Vanilla JavaScript and HTML - No frameworks. No libraries. No problem.
Are you using Vue, React, Angular, or Svelte to create web apps? I am, and if you are too, I bet it's been a while since you've written an app that renders content without these fine tools. Armed with only what comes with the browser. Years ago, this is exactly how many of us wrote web apps. While today's tools help abstract that away (and add a bunch of other benefits), it is still useful to know what is happening under the covers.
Shifting Your Node Express APIs to Serverless
If you have Express APIs you are not alone. But have you ever considered shifting this server based API model to a serverless one? Stick with me and this by the end of this article you'll see how to do it and have a working example to try for yourself. I love Node and Express for creating APIs! However, these require a server and paying for that server in the cloud.

Five Things About Visual Studio Code
You know JavaScript users love Visual Studio Code, but did you know Go and Rust are some of the most used languages in VS Code? Amanda Silver shares how you can pair program with Live Share, how Python, Go, and Rust are used in VS Code, information about one of Code's creators Erich Gamma, and how you can list and share your extensions.

How do You Structure Your Code When Moving Your API from Express to Serverless Functions?
Microsoft Azure John Papa Mar 20 Updated on Mar 21, 2019 ・6 min read There are a lot of articles showing how to use serverless functions for a variety of purposes. A lot of them cover how to get started, and they are very useful. But what do you do when you want to organize them a bit more as you do for your Node.js Express APIs? There's a lot to talk about on this topic, but in this post, I want to focus specifically on one way you can organize your code.
Peacock v1 Released
Microsoft Azure John Papa Mar 11 Updated on Mar 12, 2019 ・2 min read Have you ever found yourself switching between multiple instances of VS Code, while trying to find which one you were looking for? I often have multiple instances open for coding, writing (like this article), and pretty much everything I do with text. Being able to quickly identify each instance is super helpful. I used to switch the colors of a few key aspects of VS Code manually so I could differentiate them.
Five Things About Azure Functions
What do Azure Functions and Dr. Seuss have in common? You can run it on a plane, you can run it on a train. You debug it on a boat, you can debug it with a goat. Provided you supply the goat of course. In this episode, John and Jeff Hollan bring you five reasons you should check out Azure Functions today. You can also listen to Jeff dive deeper into serverless on his recent episode of Real Talk JavaScript.
3 Things You Can Do to Improve as a Developer
Microsoft Azure John Papa Mar 5 Updated on Mar 06, 2019 ・4 min read cross posted to johnpapa.net We Solved It! But What did We Solve? As developers, we are faced with complex problems daily. The good news is that we're problem solvers by nature. But what problem are we solving? A solution to the wrong problem, however clever it may be, isn't solving the right problem. It is our job as technologists to make sure we truly understand the problem so we can offer the appropriate help.
Keep Calm, and Keep Coding with Cosmos and Node.js
John Papa Feb 20 ・4 min read Coding with the Cosmos DB SDK feels good. Yes, I said feels good. Yeah, yeah … it is fast to install, fast to learn and fast to execute. But most of all it feels good. Think about when you are coding and everything is just flowing for you. It feels great to be in a rhythm and get everything out of your head and into the code and working fluidly! A key ingredient to this is when the APIs we are coding are intuitive and easy to follow.

Associate File Types in VS Code
Microsoft Azure John Papa Mar 15 Originally published at Medium on Dec 08, 2018 ・2 min read I love a good editor. All of the great tooling, intellisense, auto-complete and all of the goodness and efficiency. Intelligent tooling is a huge part of what makes our day fun. Don’t you agree? For example, when I open Visual Studio Code (aka VS Code) and it recognizes the file type I am editing, it lights up all of the relevant tooling features.
