Momentum is building for a protocol on crimes that affect the environment
It is encouraging to see two intergovernmental processes explore a possible additional protocol under the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) on crimes that affect the environment (CAE) over the past three years – first in 2022 under the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) resolution that was focused on illicit trafficking in wildlife, and then by the 2024 UNTOC COP 12 resolution that established a process on CAE more broadly,...
Is a Plastics Pollution Treaty still within reach?
After meeting for ten days from 5-15 August at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, countries were unable to agree on a new global plastics pollution treaty, including in the marine environment. This was not the first time countries had met to thrash out an agreement, it was the sixth time they had convened since 2022. So, are countries wasting their time or is there still hope a new treaty can be agreed?
Tourism is on the frontline of confronting wildlife crime | illuminem

Tourism operators have the capacity to conserve wildlife, realise a commercial return and generate prosperity for local people in a manner that is mutually beneficial and self-sustaining. Here is what a global agreement on tackling environmental crimes could look like
The UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) and its Protocols may not have had the level of success we would have liked, but in fairness similar observations can be made about many of the multilateral environmental agreements. However, who would say today that the international community made a mistake in adopting them—and that we don’t need global treaties on Transnational Organised Crime (TOC) or on the trafficking in persons? We need them. They put a stake in the ground.

How natural capital accounting frameworks fail ecosystem services
Ecosystem services are the benefits humans get from nature, such as fresh food, healthy soils and clean water, as well as climate regulation, pollination and disease control. Without these essential services, humanity could not survive. For example, without clean water, nutrient-rich soil, or pollinators, food production would collapse. Similarly, without climate and air regulation, life-sustaining conditions on our planet would collapse.

That sounds promising, but how effectively we use NbS and manage the various threats to NbS in achieving mitigation and other environmental and societal benefits remains to be seen.
